Under traffic routes bundling (also route bundle ) is defined as the principle, the paths of multiple (different) traffic routes to perform in a narrow space adjacent. The main advantage is that when building new traffic routes, landscape fragmentation is avoided compared to separate lines.

Deviations from bundling

If route parameters such as curve radius or gradient of the two traffic routes differ too much from one another or if there is limited space, this can make bundling in individual route sections impossible. As a result, the traffic routes run on separate routes here. In this case, the more inflexible or subsequently added traffic route must switch to a mostly more cost-intensive alternative route, which can also include complex tunnel or bridge construction .

In Germany, planned new railway lines since the 1990s have often been run parallel to existing motorway routes in large parts.

The new Rhine / Main – Rhine / Neckar line is also to run parallel to the 67 and 5 federal motorways .

In France, LGV Nord was bundled with motorways in the section between Paris and Lille over a length of 135 km (41%). The LGV Sud-Est , between Paris and Lyon , has such a bundling over a length of 60 km (14%). In Belgium, the high-speed line was HSL 3 by highway A3 between Liege and Aachen bundled.

Transport route bundling is not only used for motorized modes of transport. It is also used for the nature and environmentally friendly management of hiking trails in large protected areas. One example is the new Goetheweg on the Brocken in the Harz Mountains . With German reunification in 1990 and the accessibility of the Brocken again, the number of visitors to the mountain increased rapidly. Therefore, the historic hiking trail off the railway line, which ran over the Hirschhorn cliffs and directly up to the Brocken, was not repaired. Instead, a new path was laid parallel to the Brocken Railway . This bundling made it possible to minimize the effects on the highly sensitive nature in the core zone of the Harz National Park .
