Traugott Schiess (historian)

Traugott Schiess (born October 30, 1864 in Munich ; † February 9, 1935 in St. Gallen ; resident in Herisau ) was a Swiss historian , classical philologist , teacher and archivist from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Traugott Schiess was a son of Traugott Schiess . In 1891 he married Lydia Bruppacher, daughter of Kaspar Bruppacher, a businessman . He attended grammar school in Munich and studied classical philology in Munich and Zurich . From 1890 to 1901 he was a canton school teacher in Chur. From 1901 to 1928 he worked as a city archivist and city librarian in St. Gallen. He wrote a large number of works on the history of Eastern Switzerland and the Reformation period .

He achieved lasting merits primarily through the edition of fundamental source works. The culmination of his work was the source work published from 1933 on the creation of the Swiss Confederation . Schiess put the first and second volumes together. From 1924 to 1928 he was president of the Historical Association of the Canton of St. Gallen . He was a member of the council of the General History Research Society of Switzerland . 1912 awarded him the University of Heidelberg , the honorary doctorate title . In 1934 he received the same from the University of Bern .
