The Triebischvorstadt is an old suburb of Meissen , Saxony .

geography

The district is located in the Meissen district on both sides of the Triebisch immediately above its confluence with the Elbe . The Triebischvorstadt takes up the entire southern part of the valley widening at the mouth of the Triebisch, the northern part fills the old town of Meißner . Neighboring to the southwest and further upstream is the Triebischtal district . The Plossen rises south of the suburb, the south-eastern neighboring district is Neudörfchen . Opposite, on the other side of the Elbe, are the Vorbrücke and Cölln .

The outer border of the district initially runs from the railway bridge over the Elbe along the Borsdorf – Coswig railway line to the underpass on Wilsdruffer Straße. From there it continues on Kerstingstraße to Talstraße (which also limits the Käthe-Kollwitz-Park ) and follows it to Stiftsweg. The district boundary continues over the Stiftsweg itself as well as the street Am Steinberg and the Görniche Gasse up to the notch. From there it leads along Neu- and Gerbergasse to the Elbe, before finally reaching the starting point at the railway bridge.

In Triebischvorstadt, the S 1 line of the Dresden S-Bahn stops at the “Meißen Altstadt” stop. The most important streets in the district are Bundesstraße 6 (Uferstraße) and Staatsstraße 177 (Neumarkt / Poststraße). With Kerstingstrasse, Nicolaisteg, Hahnemannsplatz, Martinstrasse and Uferstrasse, the district has five bridges over the Triebisch. Other streets and squares in the suburbs are Wettinstrasse, Roßmarkt, Fährmannstrasse and Obergasse. The central branch of Deutsche Post in Meißen is located on Poststrasse. The main shopping street is Martinstrasse. A green promenade runs directly on the Elbe.

history

The Triebischvorstadt was south of the Meissen city wall . Its historical center is the Neumarkt, which was built around 1250. A Jewish community developed there that also owned a synagogue, but was wiped out again in 1349 - defamed as a well poisoner and child murderer. Along with a general economic decline, the Neumarkt regressed to an insignificant suburban settlement inhabited by gardeners and potters.

When the Neumarktsiedlung was founded, a church was built, today's Nikolaikirche . Originally it was a Romanesque chapel with a square choir and nave. During the Hussite Wars it was partially destroyed in 1429 and then equipped with an extended choir. In 1929 it was redesigned as a memorial for the dead of the First World War and was given a rich set of Meissen porcelain , including the largest porcelain figures ever made at over 2.50 meters high.

Originally, the immediate vicinity of the Triebischaue was at great risk even from minor floods and therefore remained undeveloped for a long time. To the south of the butcher's and Jewish gates there were only barns, brickworks and a few houses, from which a small suburb later developed. At first it was mainly carters, then less respected craftsmen, including tanners and butchers, who lived here. Samuel Hahnemann , the founder of homeopathy, was born in Meißner Triebischvorstadt in April 1755 . A plaque commemorates him on the building that followed his birthplace in the Neumarkt / Hahnemannsplatz area. The Triebischvorstadt was naturally the hardest hit of all Meißner districts by the Elbe floods in 1845 and 2002 .

In the 19th century the area was systematically divided into streets and densely built up. Crafts and industry were also located here, including the Teichert-Werke . The seat of the administrative authority of Meißen was also located on Neumarkt . Today the mostly four-story houses from the early days are characteristic. In the first half of the 20th century, the Meißen tram ran through the district. The Neumarkt-Arkaden shopping center opened on March 8, 2012 on the former site of the Teichert-Werke.
