The trumpet tongue ( Salpiglossis sinuata ) is a plant type from the genus of salpiglossis ( Salpiglossis ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae). The home of the species, which is often used as an ornamental plant , is central Chile and Peru .
description
The trumpet tongue is an herbaceous plant with a stature height of up to 1 m. The leaves of the species are usually entire, only the lower leaves occasionally have a curved edge.
The flowers are very showy and not fragrant. The crowns have a diameter of up to 6 cm, are bell-shaped, very variable in color and strongly veined. The fertile stamens sit deep in the corolla tube. In addition, a sterile staminodium is formed, which stands in the front of the corolla tube and has a stunted, 0.5 to 1 mm long anthers .
The number of chromosomes is x = 11 or n = 22.
distribution
The main distribution area of the species is in central Chile , but extends partially to Peru . It grows in bushes, on forest edges and as a ruderal plant .
use
The trumpet tongue is often used as an ornamental plant in gardens in the temperate areas of the northern hemisphere . It has been in cultivation since the first half of the 19th century; there are numerous varieties with different flower colors.
