Despite everything, there is a self-managed socio - cultural center and youth center in Witten .

history

An initiative for a self-managed, non-commercial meeting place in Witten has met since 1998 . In March 1999, a shop in the residential building Herbeder Strasse 8 was rented and in April the " Despite All" officially opened. The same shop was used from 1891 by the Witten branch of the German Metalworkers' Association and by the Witten KPD during the Weimar Republic .

The name referred to the conservative era Kohl . Similar names like Despite Allem were already in use in Witten in the 1980s when an initiative from the environment of the Witten Greens published a magazine Defens -Dem .

There were u. a. Lectures, discussions, film evenings, parties, concerts, children's mornings and on Thursdays regularly cheap vegetarian food under the name of soup culture . In cooperation with the Witten city archives , the Despite Allem witness events with the Auschwitz survivors Henryk Mandelbaum and Stanisław Hantz . On the night of December 3rd to 4th, 2005, a group of neo-Nazis pelted the entrance area during a party , and two visitors were hit but not injured. As a result, the landlord did not renew the lease that expired at the end of 2005.

A new club bar was opened at Augustastraße 58 at the end of August 2006 . The rooms were previously the club rooms of the Portuguese cultural association. A coat of arms with elements of the coat of arms and the flag of Portugal can still be seen on the counter. After a tour of the fire brigade , building regulations office and public order office , the Despite Allem was closed in October 2006. The SPD , the Greens and the CDU spoke out in favor of reopening the Despite Allems. In May 2007 there was a demonstration and a street festival for the reopening.

In spite of everything

After a renovation, the spite of everything was reopened in July 2010. An info shop was set up for the opening , which could only last until 2012. In December 2011, the Gustav Landauer Library Witten opened .

In spite of everything are u. a. the Gustav Landauer Library in Witten , the refugee aid group Grenzfrei Witten , the queer event series Transistor and the anarchist group Eastern Ruhr Area . Free flea markets and workshops take place irregularly .
