The first security service between the Berge and Steinhausen houses was mentioned in 1677 . The first compulsory fire brigade was set up in Witten in 1857. All citizens could be obliged to do so by the local police. The Turngemeinde Witten in 1863 founded the Turner Fire Department , the first volunteer fire department Witten. It formed a "club within a club" with its own board, which, however, had to be confirmed by the board of the gymnastics community. A water supply by means of water pipes was set up in Witten in 1867. In 1868 the fire brigade association festival of the Rhenish-Westphalian Armed Forces Association took place in Witten. A first wooden riser tower was built in the school yard of the Oberdorfschule in 1878 . In 1879 the Turner Fire Brigade separated and the Voluntary Fire Brigade and the Turner Fire Brigade were disbanded. A municipal hydrant department was set up in 1886 and housed at the gas and water works . In 1888 the wooden riser tower was replaced by a solid one. A new tool shed was built on Schwanenmarkt in 1895/96 . In 1906, Witten's biggest catastrophe to date occurred, the Roburit explosion , which also killed four firefighters. In 1906 the city founded two fire brigade committees. In 1920 the volunteer fire brigade consisted of 75 people and the municipal hydrant department of nine people (pipe supervisor, deputy and seven men). In 1928/29 a new fire station was built on Hauptstrasse with 18 apartments for members of the volunteer fire brigade.

After the new law on fire extinguishing was enacted in December 1933 , a new voluntary fire brigade association was founded in Witten . The previous eight fire brigade associations disbanded in February 1934. The fortune went to the new fire brigade association , the equipment to the city. A hundred was formed from the ranks of the fire brigade, the v. a. served for physical training. A fire and rescue team was put together from this hundred. When the Second World War broke out , a security and emergency service was set up from ranks of the fire brigade and other formations and placed under the police force. It has been decentralized for convenience. Part was housed in the fire station, part in the Schwenke inn , part in the community center. During the Second World War, the fire brigade was called the Fire Police . In 1945 the fire station was badly damaged by a bomb attack.

After the end of the Second World War, the fire brigade had to be rebuilt. The core team came from all over the city and was housed in the Annen fire station . From then on, the firefighters were employed full-time and were paid full-time . In 1947 the old town volunteer fire brigade was re-established. In 1976 the professional fire brigade was founded from the full-time firefighters of the volunteer fire brigade. The first youth fire brigade was founded in 1982 by the Bommerholz fire fighting unit . In 1983 the new police station of the professional fire brigade was built on Dortmunder Straße. A special task force information and communication ( SEG-IuK ) made up of professional and volunteer fire brigades was set up in 1999. The association of the fire brigade fire and flame was founded in 2008.

Since April 1, 2009, the Witten fire brigade has been alerted centrally via the district control center of the Ennepe-Ruhr district . At the same time, there is an operations center in the main station, which previously issued the alarm. The emergency number 112 has also been connected to the district control center since April 1, 2009. In the event of an alarm, the professional fire brigade is alerted via a house gong and the units of the volunteer fire brigade are alerted via radio receiver . In the course of 2011, digital alarm receivers were also issued to the fire brigade, which has now completely replaced the analog alarm system. In 2012, the Bommern volunteer fire brigade moved into a new fire station on Wengernstrasse. Freifunk has been available in the Hauptwache since April 19, 2015 .

Another innovation was the conversion of the old radio call names to operational-tactical addresses OPTA as part of the implementation of the OPTA guidelines in North Rhine-Westphalia by the district control center on July 1, 2015.

On April 30, 2016, the fire fighting units Bommerholz, Durchholz and Vormholz were given a new watch. In March 2018, the firing units Bommerholz, Durchholz and Vormholz were combined to form the “Holzer” firing unit.

The guard of the professional fire brigade is also the main guard of the Witten fire brigade . There are workshops and storage rooms for material. This station also includes a control center.

Ambulance service

The rescue service in Witten is carried out by the Ennepe-Ruhr district . Three ambulances are available in Witten , which are stationed at the main station of the professional fire brigade and at the Herbede rescue station. The professional fire brigade manned one of the ambulances and an emergency doctor vehicle . The ambulance vehicle is always manned by a paramedic and a doctor specially trained for emergency rescue, who is provided by one of the two Witten hospitals, the Marienhospital and the Evangelical Hospital . It is stationed halfway through the month at the Marienhospital and at the Evangelical Hospital . The other two ambulances are manned by the German Red Cross and the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund . Ambulances and ambulances work in the rendezvous system . The German Red Cross and the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund also provide the medical security guard service at major events and carry out the resulting emergency rescue missions.

The volunteer fire brigade consists of twelve units in the respective districts . For tactical reasons, the volunteer fire brigade is divided into five extinguishing areas, in each of which two or three units are combined. The units have a two-digit identification number in which the first digit specifies the number of the deletion area. The extinguishing areas one and two are reserved for the professional fire brigade.
