The Mönchengladbach fire brigade is part of the Mönchengladbach city administration as department (FB) 37 in Department III (general administration, citizen service, order and fire brigade) . It consists of a volunteer fire brigade, a children's fire brigade , a youth fire brigade and the professional fire brigade. The fire and rescue stations of the professional fire brigade and the fire stations of the units of the volunteer fire brigade are distributed over the city area in a historically grown structure. At almost every point in the city, an assistance period (alerting until the first emergency services arrive) of a maximum of 8 minutes can be observed. In addition to the administrative structure, the members of all fire departments in Mönchengladbach are organized in the Mönchengladbach City Fire Brigade Association.

Professional fire brigade

A total of four permanently manned fire and rescue stations (FRW) are set up in the city area, covering an area of approx. 170.4 km² in the areas of fire protection, technical assistance and rescue services. During the day there are 88 employees on duty; at night 59.

Basic unit of the fire brigade

The four FRW are located in: Neuwerk (FRW I), Holt (FRW II), Rheydt (FRW III) and Wickrath (FRW IV).

A basic unit is stationed at fire and rescue stations I, II and III. The basic unit (Mönchengladbach model) of the professional fire brigade consists of:

At the location of the FRW IV (Wickrath) the professional fire brigade manned only one ambulance; the staff is organizationally assigned to FRW III (Rheydt). The Wickrath unit of the volunteer fire brigade is also stationed there.

In the technology and logistics center (TLZ) at the FRW II location (Holt) there are various special vehicles, swap-loaders and roll-off containers.

In the command and situation center (FLZ) is the uniform control center ("Leitstelle Mönchengladbach") with the command services of the professional fire brigade: Section leaders North and South (C-Dienst II and III), situation management service and management service (D-Dienst) and the staff rooms for the crisis team of the city of Mönchengladbach and the fire brigade operations management.

At the fire brigade's training center, basic and advanced training for the entire Mönchengladbach fire brigade is carried out. Classic access to the professional fire service as a craftsman (112-DIRECT), Bachelor or Master is also offered here.

There are 19 volunteer fire brigade units in the Mönchengladbach urban area . These are located in the districts of the 4 fire and rescue stations and are alerted parallel to the professional fire brigade depending on the alarm keyword and time of day. The volunteer fire brigade is basically structured in priority, train and group units and also has some special vehicles. The Mönchengladbach “MTF Unwetter” is a crew transport vehicle with a fixed basic load (e.g. traffic protection, etc.) and can be additionally equipped with “water damage” or “storm damage” loading modules. For example, there are more individual vehicle capacities available in areas:

TH Use of an HLF

The 19th unit of the volunteer fire brigade is the IuK unit that emerged from the former telecommunications service of the disaster control (management unit of the city). The key figure for the IuK unit is 10. It has the task of supporting the deployment site with management tools (ELW 1) and auxiliary management staff and is active throughout the city. She also accompanies the associations in inter-regional operations or guides the “Senior Emergency Doctor” (LNA) to the place of operation.

The four-digit unit code shows in which FRW district this unit is located and whether it is a group, train or priority unit. Example: Odenkirchen unit (code: 1311) Voluntary fire brigade in the area FRW III (13), 1st train unit in the Rheydt focus (11). This code can be found in the paging name. Example: The Odenkirchen unit has the vehicles HLF 20 (13-HLF20-11), SW 2000-KatS (13-SW2000-11) and MTF (13-MTF-11).

Ambulance service

Current ambulance in the courtyard of the Holt fire station

The ambulances of the rescue service in Mönchengladbach are stationed at the four fire and rescue stations (see professional fire brigade).

Helmets - yellow crew - white leadership service

On July 24, 1981, the emergency doctor system was introduced in Mönchengladbach. Since then, an ambulance and an emergency doctor's vehicle (NEF) have been driving to the emergency site from different locations and meet there in the so-called rendezvous system . In the meantime, three NEFs have been used in the Mönchengladbach urban area. All NEF are stationed at hospitals in the city and are manned by one paramedic (in future: paramedic) and an emergency doctor . The emergency doctor vehicle 1 (north) is stationed 24 hours a week alternating at three different hospitals and the southern medical vehicle 2 (12h) and 3 (24h) at the Elisabeth Hospital in Rheydt.

All four aid organizations active in Mönchengladbach are integrated into the emergency rescue service with a 12-hour ambulance ( German Red Cross (DRK) , Johanniter Unfall-Hilfe (JUH) , Arbeiter Samariter Bund (ASB) and Malteser Hilfsdienst (MHD) ).

The three aid organizations ASB, DRK and JUH are active in patient transport . A total of 9 ambulances, type A2, are in service. There are 2 KTW each occupied by ASB and DRK. 4 more KTW are operated by the JUH. A KTW to cover peak demand (during the day) and for the night is provided on a weekly basis between ASB, DRK and JUH.

To reinforce the emergency rescue, four additional ambulances (“KatS-RTW”) type C, each manned by one of the four aid organizations, are available. Likewise, one of the doctors from the senior emergency doctor group is always on call and, if necessary, reinforces the management service of the professional fire brigade or fire brigade operations management.

Rescue helicopters stationed in the vicinity can be used for special deployment indications . Mönchengladbach is part of the sponsoring community of Christoph 9 based in Duisburg.

  • Christoph 3, location: Cologne
  • Christoph 9, location: Duisburg
  • Christoph Europa 1, location: Würselen
  • Christoph Rheinland, location: Cologne

Since 2012, the position of "Medical Director Rescue Service" (ÄLRD) has been set up and is permanently occupied by an experienced senior doctor in cooperation with the Mönchengladbach City Clinics. In this context, the Mönchengladbach ambulance service also became part of the "Joint Rescue Service Compendium" - 19 cities and districts with 5,755,000 people, 730,000 emergency missions per year, 300 ambulance vehicles, 83 NEF, 2 RTH and 1 tele emergency doctor under a uniform treatment concept. The Mönchengladbach ambulance service participates in the German resuscitation register.

The latest innovation is the operation of a medi-car with a mechanical resuscitation aid. He is sent to every resuscitation if the control center is already instructing the lay resuscitation or can be requested by the deployment center if a patient has to be resuscitated and this appears necessary for the transport. In the case of lay resuscitation already instructed by the control center, an alarm is also sent to an HLF 20 of the BF for support.

The Mönchengladbach fire brigade operates a state-approved rescue service school at the training center and trains a.o. a. Emergency paramedics. The 112-MEDIC course is offered for students with an intermediate level of education to join the professional fire service.

Special task forces

There are three special task forces in the Mönchengladbach fire brigade, in which fire brigade colleagues and comrades take on additional tasks in addition to their regular area of activity:

  • Special Task Force (SEG) "ABC / CBRN"
  • Special task force (SEG) "Rescue from highs and lows"
  • Special Task Force (SEG) "Rescue Service"

Staff from the professional fire brigade are often active here with comrades from the various units of the volunteer fire brigade.

SEG ABC / CBRN

This special task force has existed since 1994. A foundation was necessary because Mönchengladbach is surrounded by four federal motorways ( A 44 , A 46 , A 52 and A 61 ) and several chemical companies are located.

The task of the special task force is to support the emergency services on site. It can take on the tasks of measuring and decontamination . The decon trucks P and the ABC-ErkKw are used for this purpose. Likewise the AB-V-Dekon NRW. The SEG is supported by several ABC consultants.

SEG Rescue from highs and lows

This SEG is primarily used to rescue or rescue people. There is at least one employee with the appropriate qualifications in the FRW II daily operations who can be supported by colleagues from their free time. A coordinator is also on call 24/7.

SEG rescue service

This SEG is used in the event of mass casualties (from 25 persons affected) or for precautionary provision at major events. It can fall back on additional ambulance (reserve) and the AB-RettD and AB-MANV NRW.
