history

The Hamm fire brigade was founded on March 25, 1877 as a volunteer fire brigade . After the Second World War it was supplemented by full-time emergency services. From this point on, the Hamm fire brigade also took over the ambulance transport .

After an amendment to the Fire Protection and Assistance Act (FSHG) of February 25, 1975, all cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants in North Rhine-Westphalia were obliged to set up a professional fire brigade. The city of Hamm fulfilled this obligation and founded the Hamm professional fire department on the same date.

In October 1971, the Hamm fire brigade, together with the district fire brigade associations of the Warendorf , Soest , Unna and Coesfeld districts, founded the Ahlen-Brockhausen Fire Brigade Training Center (FAS).

There was a provisional emergency medical service in the city since 1973, which was carried out by the Marienhospital from April 1975. The city signed a contract three years later, which now also included the Knappschaftskrankenhaus in the emergency doctor system. As a result, the two hospitals took turns in the position of the emergency doctor on a weekly basis. In the following years, the remaining hospitals also joined the system. The city has had emergency doctor locations since 1989, each covering the northern and southern part of the city. A baby ambulance was operated from 1992 to 2010. Then these transports were taken over with air-sprung ambulance.

In the period from 1980 to 1985, all vehicles of the Hamm fire brigade were equipped with the radio alarm system (FMS). The system has a positive effect on the control center and the vehicle crew because you can now do without standard messages in radio communication, which saves time. The driver can now confirm the status at the push of a button, for example that the order has been received and is now being carried out.

In 1981, the professional fire brigade procured their first swap body vehicle (WLF), which had a flatbed and a crane. The reasons for the introduction of the swap body system were that for vehicles that were seldom used and replaced by containers , the money for the maintenance of several chassis is now saved. To date, the system has been expanded to include five carrier vehicles and 26 roll-off containers, of which the chemical protection and powder superstructures are permanently attached.

In 1984 the fire brigade's technical center was set up in the Bockum-Hövel district , whose task it is to repair, maintain and look after all the fire brigade's technology. Urgent security checks are also carried out at this location. In the building, which also houses the fire station of the volunteer fire department is Hoevel, also are breathing apparatus (AGT) off and further training, which is why here respirator -Übungsanlage was housed.

The city council decided on July 5, 1988 that the fire brigade would be spun off from the city center, which was completed on August 31, 1992 with the start of construction on the new fire station on Hafenstrasse.

The fleet of the professional fire brigade is supplemented by a number of vehicles with multiple uses, due to the quick change of equipment. Five so-called system vehicles, which were put into service in August 1992, can be used for both fire and rescue service purposes. The vehicles were Mercedes-Benz T-models (W124) which were used as command vehicles (KdoW) or NEF until 2008 . The system was continued with the procurement of several identical NEF and ELW. Here, too, the equipment can be interchanged depending on the purpose.

At the beginning of December 1994, the city was able to officially receive the new fire and rescue station (FRW) from the general contractor . However, the relocation of administration , technology and staff could only be carried out gradually, which took the following five months, so that operations could finally be started in April 1995. In order to ensure the safety of the Hammer population from December to April, the control centers and guards at the old location on Sedanstrasse and the new one on Hafenstrasse were manned. With the new control center, a new operations control computer was also put into operation. From then on, the control center was able to use the Global Positioning System (GPS) to locate the vehicles and thereby guide and steer them in real time (was only used for a few years because the radio operator stopped this service). On May 7, 1995, the inauguration of the building was celebrated with an open house, which was attended by 30,000 visitors.

On May 3, 2010, the second guard of the professional fire brigade was put into service on Hohefeldweg. This guard is manned on day duty (Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.) with a fire fighting vehicle, turntable ladder and an emergency vehicle. The wax strength should be 10 functions. In addition, an ambulance is set up at this station on 24 hour duty.

Professional fire brigade

The professional fire brigade provides basic security for the city in terms of fire protection and rescue services . It operates from two full-time fire and rescue stations throughout the city. The fire and rescue station 1 at Hafenstrasse 45 is available 24 hours a day with 3 guard departments around the clock. The fire and rescue station 2 (so-called Wache Ost) on Hohefeldweg, which was newly put into service in 2010, also provides the rescue service on a 24-hour system and fire protection in the eastern parts of the city on weekdays from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for sure. Outside the working hours of FRW 2, the volunteer fire brigades are active in this area of the city to ensure adequate fire protection. The security staff is 25 functions at fire station 1 and all rescue service locations. Your special task is to monitor a large area and the two motorways A1 and A2 up to the Kamener Kreuz .

Ambulance service

The rescue service in the urban area is organized by the fire brigade and carried out by itself. The Krankentransport Herzig GmbH was involved in the public rescue service from 1990. The company was taken over by the large company FALCK in 2011. The rescue service was remunicipalised on January 1, 2017. Since then, all rescue service tasks have again been carried out by the Hamm fire department itself. The fire brigade has thirteen ambulances (RTW), three type B ambulances (KTW-B), three ambulances (KTW) and two specially equipped ambulances (KTW) for heavy ( S-KTW ) or infectious ( I-KTW ) people to carry out their tasks ) Patients. Four of the thirteen rescue vehicles are assigned to the various locations of the volunteer fire brigade in Hamm-Herringen, Heessen, Uentrop, and Werries and are manned by paramedics and paramedics. If necessary, these are alerted via digital radio signal receivers. Two ambulance vehicles provide emergency medical care. In Hamm, the " rendezvous system " is used in the event of an emergency doctor's call , with which an ambulance is always alerted in addition to the emergency doctor vehicle. This has the advantage that in the event of a misjudgment of the situation, the emergency doctor can terminate the operation and is ready for action again. A total of 75 emergency doctors are available to the Hamm fire brigade. In the event of mass casualties (MANV), another vehicle is available for the chief emergency physician (LNA). The transport incubators were transported in a baby ambulance until 2010 . Starting in 2010, the incubators with air-sprung ambulance will also be used outside of the local area. The rescue helicopter (RTH) Christoph 8 from Lünen also flies missions in Hamm.
