history

Great city fire in 1656

City fire Aachen
(old painting)

On May 2, 1656 , a great catastrophe broke out in the city when Peter Maw's bakery below Jakobstrasse caught fire and almost the entire city caught fire within 20 hours. According to an official census, the great city fire destroyed 4,664 of the approximately 5,300 houses in Aachen, and 17 deaths were recorded. Medieval Aachen with its Gothic buildings almost completely fell victim to the flames, only the stone Aachen Cathedral was spared. Rapid and effective fire fighting was not possible at that time. As a result, several fire regulations were issued, which contained, among other things, regulations on fire fighting, fire prevention, provisions on the obligation to extinguish the residents and the availability of water and extinguishing equipment.

Foundation of the volunteer fire brigade

In March 1836 the fire brigade was reorganized and a fire corps in the form of a volunteer fire brigade was set up. It was divided into eight companies, a rescue company and a craft company. The first colonel of the fire corps was the then mayor Josef Tilmans.

However, at the latest during a major fire in the Toenis cloth factory in 1866, which could not be fought in time, the organization of the fire brigade was still insufficient. Emil Lochner , also a cloth manufacturer and since February 1, 1866, commander of the fire brigade, took this as an opportunity and published a memorandum on December 19, 1866 with the following demands:

  • Establishment of a fire telegraph
  • Establishment of a guard post (guard room with syringe) with 12 men of service who are supposed to be on standby at all times
  • Construction of a practice house (Steigerturm) for leader exercises
  • Division of the fire brigade into three barracked companies on site

Foundation of the professional fire brigade

On November 1, 1871, Emil Lochner's demands were largely implemented. Three companies were barracked in three places in the city and a day watch was set up in the town hall. The three companies were barracked in the newly built fire department barracks in Kasernenstrasse and Oligsbendengasse and in temporarily rented buildings in Klosterbongard (Marienbongard). At that time the fire brigade comprised 111 men in total, of which only three sergeants and three porters were employed. The other teams were rewarded according to the service they performed.

Professional fire brigade

The professional fire brigade (BF) consists of approx. 14 employees and 435 emergency officers, 70 of whom are permanently occupied. Three fire and rescue stations are manned throughout the city. In addition to the Hauptwache (FW 1) with a disengagement area in the city center, FW 2 (Kornelimünster / Süd) and FW 3 (Wache Nord) are also served with their respective catchment areas. Fire protection at the Aachen University Hospital is ensured by a plant fire brigade. In terms of organization and personnel, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, as the responsible body, has contractually handed over this task to the city of Aachen, which thus takes on the organizational, personnel and material equipment of the fire department guard (FW 8).

Ambulance service

As the provider of the rescue service, the professional fire brigade runs the rescue service for the city of Aachen (Section 300).

The professional fire brigade is involved in the rescue service with rescue equipment from the North (3), South (2) and Hauptwache (1) guards. Furthermore, the aid organizations German Red Cross , Johanniter Unfallhilfe and Malteser Hilfsdienst are involved in the rescue service and patient transport. Only urban vehicles that are serviced by the fire service's own workshop are used in the rescue service.

In Aachen, the rendezvous system , which is widespread in the region, is used, ambulance and emergency doctor vehicle meet at the scene. The city does not use ambulances. According to the emergency service requirement plan and the result of the last emergency service tender, the following vehicles will be available at the individual locations as of January 1, 2014:

Extended ambulance service

The aid organizations also manned rescue equipment if necessary. A so-called SET (rapid response team) consists of a KTW and an ambulance . Reserve vehicles from the regular rescue service or the organization's own vehicles are used for this task.

For the SET-KTW there is currently no alarm option via DME, so these must be requested by telephone from the aid organizations.

vehicles

  • Either MB Sprinter with box body or MB Vario are used as ambulances.
  • MB Vito are used as emergency doctor vehicles.
  • The KTW are all based on MB Sprinter (short version) in different generations.

Civil protection

The medical and care service in disaster control in the city of Aachen consists of the following units:

  • 1. Mission unit NRW Aachen-Stadt ( DRK )
  • 2nd mission unit NRW Aachen-Stadt ( JUH )
  • 3rd mission unit NRW Aachen-Stadt ( MHD )
  • 4. Mission unit NRW Aachen-Stadt ( MHD )

For mass casualties (MCI) stands guard on the North, a change loader vehicle (WLF) with Roll-ready (AB MANV 50). This is used together with the medical equipment trolley (GW-San 25) of the emergency units. The four operational units alternate monthly in a rotation process with the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th alarm priority.

Smaller medical service situations or care situations are dealt with by individual operational units or the respective medical or care groups.

To implement the state-wide disaster control concepts, Treatment Center Readiness 50 NRW (BHP-50 NRW) and Care Center Readiness 500 NRW (BHP-500 NRW), two operational units are organizationally combined. The 1st deployment unit and the 3rd deployment unit form the care center readiness 500 NRW and the 2nd deployment unit together with the 4th deployment unit form the treatment center readiness 50 NRW. In order to ensure that the staff is manned, the units that are not affected are also alerted during exercises or operations so that personnel support can be provided if necessary. The voluntary units are alerted by means of digital message receivers.

Furthermore, when a patient transport train 10 NRW (PTZ-10 NRW) is requested, the individual vehicles and crews are essentially pulled together from the operational units.
