history

The indigenous people of the Chinook tribe used the wetlands and swamps along the Columbia River for hunting and fishing.

In October 1792, Lieutenant William Broughton was traveling on the Sandy River with some soldiers. On this trip he named several places and mountains, including Mount Hood and Broughton Bluff near Troutdale.

On their expedition a decade later, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark passed Mount Hood and confirmed Lt. Broughton's naming. Their journey marked the beginning of the overland journey to this region.

The first settlers arrived on the Oregon Trail around 1850 and started a small community called Sandy. David F. Buxton emerged as the founder of Troutdales because he was granted a piece of land in the center of what is now Troutdales in 1853. He developed the first water supply for the city, which was used until the 1960s.

In 1872 former ship captain John Harlow bought parts of Buxton's Land and built a property on the Sandy River . There he raised trout (en. Trout ) and therefore named his estate Troutdale. He used the expansion of the Portland railway line for his trade and thus ensured that Troutdale received its own stop along the railway line in November 1882. After Harlow's death in 1883, his wife arranged for a new section of town to be built on what is now known as Hungry Hill.

Aaron Fox, who owned a shop and restaurant in the town, pioneered the incorporation of the town in 1907 and therefore became the first mayor of Troutdale. In the same year there was a fire that destroyed the houses built in the 1890s. A church and other houses, which were all on "Hungry Hill", survived the fire.

In 1913 women in Oregon were allowed to vote for the first time , and the office of mayor went to a woman, Clara Latourell Larsson, that year. A few years later, the Historic Columbia River Highway was built in 1916 and ran 120 km through Oregon from Troutdale to The Dallas . This resulted in more travelers passing through Troutdale and tourism grew.

Troutdale was named Celery Capital of the Word for growing award-winning celery there. But other "Troutdale vegetables" and especially strawberries were delivered to all corners of the USA .

During World War II , many workers came to Troutdale to work in the aluminum mill, which made Troutdale grow strongly in the 1940s. Troutdale's boom flattened when the Columbia River Highway was replaced by Interstate 84 in the 1950s, and therefore significantly fewer travelers came through Troutdale than before.
