1 1 The long glowing darkness The Long Bright Dark Jan. 12, 2014 Apr 17, 2014 Cary Joji Fukunaga Nic Pizzolatto 2.33 million
Louisiana, 1995. Police officers Martin Hart and Rustin "Rust" Cohle investigate the ritual murder of former prostitute Dora Kelly Lange. Her naked corpse was found in a tied, praying posture with deer antlers attached and a symbol painted on its back. A rod lattice, similar to a Cajun - Birdtrap is found next to her. Cohle is convinced that she is not the killer's first victim, but Hart is skeptical. Her research leads her to the case of Marie Fontenot, a young girl whose disappearance five years ago was not further investigated. There is also the testimony of another girl who was hunted in the forest by a "green-eared spaghetti monster". Hart invites Cohle to dinner with himself and his family, unaware that it is the birthday of Cohle's deceased daughter. Cohle reluctantly accepts, but appears drunk. Hart and Cohle visit the missing girl's uncle, Marie. There Cohle finds another rod fence in a dilapidated gazebo.

17 years later, Cohle and Hart are questioned separately about Dora Kelly Lange by detectives Thomas Papania and Maynard Gilbough, five days apart. Hart and Cohle have not spoken to each other for ten years since a falling out in 2002. Cohle is shown a photo of another girl whose body was found in a pose similar to Lange. Papania and Gilbough want to know how the killer struck again, despite being caught in 1995.

2 2 Visions Seeing things Jan. 19, 2014 Apr 24, 2014 Cary Joji Fukunaga Nic Pizzolatto 1.67 million
Cohle and Hart learn that the murdered Dora Lange belonged to a parish before she disappeared. Cohle suspects that Hart is cheating on his wife Maggie with the young court clerk Lisa Tragnetti. This leads to tension between the two work colleagues. Cohle also suffers from persistent cognitive disorder after hallucinogen use and contradicts Reverend Billy Lee Tuttle's decision to call the Special Unit on Anti-Christian Crimes to help in the case. While buying drugs from a young prostitute, Cohle is made aware of a trailer park for runaways. The detectives find Lange's diary in the settlement and learn the location of the church, which was destroyed in a fire. As they search the rubble, they discover a nightmarish wall drawing of a woman with deer antlers.

In the present day, Papania and Gilbough are continuing their interrogations with Cohle and Hart. Hart is now divorced. Cohle reports that before he was transferred to Louisiana in 1995, his daughter died in a car accident that broke up his marriage and led to his drug addiction. Subsequently, Cohle was transferred to the drug search and worked as an informant for four years. He was later sent to a mental hospital for four months after shooting three members of a drug cartel. Cohle then applied for a murder assignment, which brought him together with Hart in 1995.

3 3 The locked room The Locked Room Jan. 26, 2014 May 1, 2014 Cary Joji Fukunaga Nic Pizzolatto 1.93 million
Hart and Cohle find the owner of the burned-down church, Preacher Joel Theriot, and learn that Dora Lange has often been seen with a tall man with scars on his face. You are looking for him and at the same time you are urged to turn the case over to the special commission. Hart's marriage seems to be stabilizing again, but he attacks Lisa's new boyfriend because he is obviously jealous. Cohle searches old deaths to find a similar one to Langes, and comes across Rianne Olivier, who is believed to have accidentally drowned, but whose death resembles Lange's. Olivier's grandfather says she attended the Light of the Way religious school, run by Reverend Tuttle, before running away with her boyfriend Reggie Ledoux, a drug dealer, sex offender and former cellmate of Lange's ex-husband. The investigators set out to arrest him.

Papanias and Gilbough's conversations with Hart and Cohle expose their character flaws, particularly Hart's hypocritical views of morality and Cohle's nihilistic view of the world.

4th 4th Who's there? Who Goes There Feb 9, 2014 May 8, 2014 Cary Joji Fukunaga Nic Pizzolatto 1.99 million
In 1995, Hart and Cohle interrogate Lange, who is able to provide information about his former cell neighbor, Ledoux. Lange informs the detectives that he has shown him pictures of Dora and gives them the name of one of Ledoux's partners: Tyrone Weem. Hart finds Weem at a warehouse rave and forces him at gunpoint to reveal the name of the biker gang Ledoux meth cooks for: the Iron Crusaders gang. Cohle, who used to work as an undercover agent in the same gang, takes vacation days to sneak in again, using the excuse that his father was diagnosed with leukemia . Meanwhile, Lisa goes to Maggie and tells her all about Hart's affair. Hart comes home and finds out that Maggie kicked him out of there. He then drives to the hospital where Maggie works to confront her. He is almost thrown out of the building, but Cohle steps in and can persuade him to come with him. Together they drive to the Iron Crusaders meeting point, where Cohle poses as a representative of a Mexican drug cartel while Hart waits in the car. In order for his contact named Ginger to agree to a deal, Cohle has to help rob a drug stash in the social housing . Disguised as police officers, the biker gang infiltrated the building. However, when one of the bikers shoots a gangster, a shooting begins. Cohle drags his contact outside and is picked up by Hart with a car. Together they escape the police.

During the 2012 interrogation, Papania and Gilbough question Cohle's story about his vacation days, arguing that there is no medical record for his father. Cohle tells investigators about his father.

5 5 The secret fate of all life The Secret Fate of All Life Feb 16, 2014 May 15, 2014 Cary Joji Fukunaga Nic Pizzolatto 2.25 million
In 1995, Ginger and Cohle meet (still undercover) with DeWall Ledoux, Reggie's drug partner and relative, in a bar. DeWall refuses to enter into a drug deal with Cohle, but after DeWall leaves, Hart follows him. Hart gives Cohle his location, and they both meet near the meth lab in the bayou , where Cohle leads them past booby traps towards the lab. They approach the house and handcuff Reggie. Cohle holds DeWall in check, who has just left the lab, while Hart searches the area and discovers two kidnapped and abused children, one of them dead. In his anger, Hart kills Reggie Ledoux with a headshot. DeWall panics and escapes, but is killed by a booby trap. Hart removes the handcuffs from the dead Ledoux, and Cohle shoots an AK-47 across the grounds to make it look like a gunfight. In their conversations in 2012 (with a voice-over of what actually happened) and before a commission of inquiry into the shooting in 1995, both claim to have survived a chaotic firefight in which Hart succeeded in killing Ledoux. Hart and Cohle are hailed as heroes in their police station and in the press, and receive awards and promotions.

Hart is reconciled with his wife in 2002, while Cohle has a doctor as a girlfriend. Hart's daughter Audrey leads to new tensions within the family through her rebellious behavior. Cohle, a celebrated interrogator, is said to help with a confession from a robbery who was intoxicated by PCP at the time of the crime . After his confession, the prisoner requests a deal from Cohle, stating that Ledoux was not the murderer of the missing girls. The real perpetrator has relationships with important people, and he himself knows about the "Yellow King" - a detail in the Dora Lange case that was withheld from the public. Cohle beats the man and asks for a name, but is stopped by other police officers. When he returns with Hart shortly afterwards, they learn that the prisoner committed suicide after being called in his cell. The call allegedly came from his lawyer but was made from a phone booth in a deserted area. Cohle re-examines the dilapidated religious school, where he finds dozens of the branch figures, drawings and black stars on the walls.

Papania and Gilbough told Hart in 2012 that they suspected Cohle of being the culprit. Cohle was spotted in a group of onlookers at the new crime scene in Lake Charles , similar to that of the Dora Lange case. Cohle is also suspected of having something to do with the unexplained death of Reverend Tuttle two years earlier. After these accusations, Cohle breaks off the conversation and asks the detectives to apply for an arrest warrant. Hart is asked to explain exactly what happened between him and Cohle in 2002.

6th 6th The ghosts that I called Haunted Houses 23 Feb 2014 May 22, 2014 Cary Joji Fukunaga Nic Pizzolatto 2.64 million
In 2002, Cohle alone is investigating a number of ancient missing persons cases and establishing a link between the victims and the Tuttle schools. He visits Theriot, who has left the rectory and turned alcoholic, to question him about Wellspring. Wellspring was a foundation that funded village schools, while Theriot was a seminarian at a Tuttle college. Theriot alleges that Wellspring covered up child abuse cases and that he was silenced when he asked questions about it in 1995. Cohle tries to speak to Kelly, Ledoux's 1995 surviving victim who is being held in a mental hospital due to regressive catatonia . Cohle wants to know if a third man was involved in the kidnapping. Describing him as a huge, scarred man, she starts screaming when Cohle tries to find out more about his face. Despite being told to stop investigating, Cohle meets with Tuttle, ostensibly to find out the names of former Wellspring employees, but actually to get reactions from Tuttle. Tuttle complains about him and lies about the meeting. Cohle takes this as evidence of Tuttle's guilt, but is still suspended from duty. Hart meets Beth (Lili Simmons), a former underage prostitute whom he interviewed in the Dora Lange case, and begins an affair with her. His wife Maggie is suspicious, checks Hart's cell phone and finds pictures of Beth there. She goes to Cohle's apartment and seduces him; Cohle, disgusted and angry when Maggie tells him that she only had sex with him to get rid of Hart, throws her out. Maggie tells Hart about her affair, who then attacks Cohle in the parking lot of the police station.

In 2012, Papania and Gilbough talk to Maggie, who is newly married. She scorns her motives and denies that Hart's divorce had anything to do with Cohle. Cohle describes her as a good man with integrity. Hart suddenly leaves his conversation when Papania and Gilbrough suspect that Cohle may have killed Tuttle in 2010 and that he is responsible for the other murders as well. Cohle follows Hart and initiates their first contact since the fight in 2002. Cohle asks Hart to buy him a beer to talk to. Hart agrees, but armed himself with a revolver.

7th 7th After you left After you've gone March 2, 2014 May 29, 2014 Cary Joji Fukunaga Nic Pizzolatto 2.34 million
In 2012, Cohle tries to convince the unwilling Hart to help him find the man with the scars. He reminds Hart that both of them have a moral guilt for what happened in 1995. He takes Hart to a rental warehouse , where he convinces him of the existence of a cult that combines elements of Courir de Mardi Gras , Santería and Louisiana Voodoo in its rites. Cohle has compiled evidence linking Tuttle and others to the disappearances of dozens of women and children dating back to the 1980s. Cohle admits to searching Tuttle's houses to find evidence. In a safe he found photographs and a video cassette with the ritual sacrifice by Marie Fontenot. However, he denies killing Tuttle, speculating that Tuttle was killed by other cult members because he was exposed to blackmail. Hart finds a relative of Ledoux's who confirms that Reggie and DeWall were connected to the Scar Man. They find a former servant of Tuttles father Sam from the time the Tuttles lived in Vermilion Parish . She remembers a boy with scars on his face who was one of Sam Tuttle's illegitimate grandchildren from his “other” family called Childress. Hart also finds out that the Vermilion Parish deputy , who was originally responsible for the Fontenot case and who recorded the testimony at the time, is Hart's old friend (and Cohle's antagonist ) Steve Geraci. He broke off the investigation in 1995 and has since been promoted to Sheriff des Parish . This cover-up of the Fontenot kidnapping is said to have been caused by the then Vermilion Parish sheriff Ted Childress, who belonged to the Tuttle clan. Hart and Cohle kidnap Geraci to extort more information at gunpoint. Meanwhile, Gilbough and Papania got lost in their search for an old church that Cohle mentioned in his conversation with them. They ask a man on a lawnmower who is working in a secluded cemetery for directions. The detectives don't notice the scars on the giant's face. At the end of the episode he says: "My family has lived here for a long, long time."
8th 8th Form and emptiness Form and Void March 9, 2014 5th June 2014 Cary Joji Fukunaga Nic Pizzolatto 3.52 million
The scarred serial killer is in his secluded and trashed house, in the middle of the bayou. He lives there with his mentally handicapped half-sister, with whom he also has sex, expresses his philosophies with different voices and accents and keeps his almost dead father trapped in a shed on the property that is decorated with obscure paintings. His emaciated father is chained to a bed without a mattress and his mouth was sewn shut. During his work, the murderer paints a school building and watches the children playing around in the yard. Cohle and Hart interrogate Geraci and use the videotape of the Fontenot sacrifice to make him talk. They learn that the sheriff's name was Childress and that he was covering up Marie Fontenot's disappearance. The green ears of the “Erath Spaghetti Monster” are hard to spot on his phantom drawing, and he concludes that this could be the color. They find out that at that time a company called "Childress and Son" was painting a house green, which also employed a man with scars on his face. Arriving at the house of William Childress, the owner of the company, Cohle immediately notices that it must be the serial killer's house. Errol Childress, the scarred man, flees and is pursued by Cohle into a vast and overgrown labyrinth of stones and branches - Carcosa. Hart breaks into Childress' house and forces the half-sister to reveal the whereabouts of the landline phone because there is no cell phone reception. Inside Carcosa and after many corpses were found, Cohle hallucinates a spiral-shaped vortex on the ceiling, similar to the black spiral symbol of the Tuttle family and their relatives. Suddenly he is attacked by Childress, who stabs him in the stomach and lifts him off the floor with the knife. Cohle manages to give Errol several nuts in the head and is able to break free. Hart joins them and shoots Errol, injuring him, but the murderer still manages to throw a hatchet into his chest. When Errol tries to deal the fatal blow to Hart, Cohle shoots Childress in the head. Papania and Gilbough, who had previously been called to the scene by Hart, arrive at the house with reinforcements and find the half-sister in handcuffs and, a little later, Hart, who calls for help from the seriously injured Cohle in Carcosa. After a long stay in the hospital, both men are recovering from their injuries. The police have found enough evidence to prove Errol's murder of Dora Lange and dozens of others. However, nothing could be found that connects Errol and Carcosa with the Tuttles, who thus escape punishment. Hart and Cohle accept that they will never convict the rest and that they just caught "their husband". Hart sees his entire family together for the first time in years and breaks down in tears. Hardly Cohle rolls out of the hospital in a wheelchair, and they talk in the parking lot. Cohle tells of his coma experience, during which he felt the closeness of his dead daughter and his dead father and from this experience draws a great hopeful perspective for life. Cohle describes the comprehensive struggle between light and darkness. Based on the night sky, Hart notices that darkness has much more area. Cohle replies: “It used to be only darkness. If you ask me, the light wins. ”They both leave the hospital together.
