Truffle is an English New Wave of British Heavy Metal and Hard Rock band from Portsmouth , which was founded in 1981, split up in 1989 and has been active again since 2013.

history

The band was formed in the fall of 1981, the name being borrowed from the Beatles song Savoy Truffle . The line-up consisted of singer and bassist Russ Horton, guitarists John Dunning and Ritchie Stopforth and drummer Peter Patterson. In the same year a double A-side single was released on Chestnut Records under the name Round Tower / If You Really Want , which was recorded in the local Chestnut studio . The songs for the single were chosen by the fans themselves. The single was featured in the Armed and Ready section of Kerrang magazine and was also played by various radio stations. Concerts in the south of England followed, with the band also performing with Tank and Diamond Head , among others . In addition, the group was able to perform in London once . After an appearance with Spider , the band was booked for another in the Marquee Club in the summer of 1982 . This gig, in which the group played songs such as Denim and Dandruff , City Girl and a cover version of Ace of Spades , was discussed as a concert report at Kerrang . In 1983 the band took part in the Reading Festival , but it was not on the official band list, but played in the adjacent parking lot in front of a small audience. The following year the band had expanded to a quintet with the addition of guitarist and keyboardist Mark Mulholland, whereupon a five-song demo was recorded. The hoped for success did not materialize, however. After that, Dunning left the cast. In the same year the single 633 Squadron / Do You Like Heavy Metal was released . In 1985 the single contender Starlight was recorded, but the planned release as a record never took place. About a year later, the album The Bacon Slicer Strikes was released as a compact cassette , on which songs such as God of War , Street Fighter and Thunderbird are included. The group had previously rejected their plan to release a self-financed album as a record. That same year, guitarist and keyboardist Greg Watkins left the line-up, followed by guitarist Paul Jupe and keyboardist Clive. In 1988, after Mulholland's departure, the band only had one guitarist, Stopforth. For the rest of the decade, Truffle remained active, with the line-up of the guitarist changing several times. Tim Meek, John Bowyer and Gary Jeffrey, among others, were active as guitarists during this time. Live the band played songs like Running out of Time and Million Miles Away . The local and national music press registered the band hustle and bustle, which was expressed in the occasional mention of the band name and live reviews. In 1989 the band broke up. The group founded the cover band Mafia back in 1986. As their popularity grew, it was decided to dissolve Truffle. In 2011 the compilations If You Really Want and 1st Attempt were released via High Roller Records and The Bacon Slicer Strikes were re-released. All material had been re-mastered for this. After the band recorded the three songs Hot on the Streets , Cinderella and UFO at the 2020 Studios in Farlington , they performed live in Portsmouth in March 2013. In 2014 she was represented at the Brofest and in 2015 the band was also active live.

style

Malc Macmillan wrote in The NWOBHM Encyclopedia that the song If You Really Want from the debut single is in the medium speed range, while Round Tower is a shallower semi-ballad. Similarities to Dorcas , Whitefire and Rage can be heard here. The following demo offers catchier songs. The album The Bacon Slicer Strikes is more like the Bitches Sin material that this band was playing at the time. Otger Jeske noted in NWoBHM New Wave of British Heavy Metal The glory Days, above all, the length of the title song of the debut single of over eight minutes, which was unusually long for the time. In The International Encyclopedia of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal , the sound of the single was compared to that of Aerosmith .
