Bitches Sin is an English new wave of British heavy metal and hard rock band from Barrow-in-Furness , founded in 1980 and disbanded in 1986. After the group got back together briefly in 1988, they have been regularly active again since 2005.

history

The band was founded in April 1980, although the members had previously gained experience in various smaller amateur bands. The group consisted of brothers and guitarists Ian and Pete Toomey, singer Alan "Cocky" Cockburn, bassist Perry "Pez" Hodder and drummer Bill Knowles. In August followed a first demo called Twelve Pounds and No Kinks , which includes the songs Bitches Sin , Two of a Kind and White Lady . The demo stood out quite well and the band was played more often, especially in the northwest. Picadilly Radio in particular played the demo quite often. Subsequently, Neat Records became aware of the group, about which the single Always Ready (for Love) , with the song Sign of the Times as B-side, appeared in early 1981 . The band was able to achieve greater attention, especially in the Netherlands , as the title song was often played by DJane Hanneke Kappen in their show. In the same year also appeared the song Down the Road , which came from Twelve Pounds and No Kinks , on the Neat Records sampler Lead Weight . For the sampler Heavy Metal Heroes , which appeared in the same year on Heavy Metal Records , the group contributed the song Strangers on the Shore .

After that, the Toomey brothers decided to recruit the band to include singer Tony Tomkinson, bassist Dave Newsham and drummer Tony Leece. The bassist Hodder founded the band Goldsmith after leaving . This was followed by the demo Your Place or Mine . On October 16, 1981, the band could be heard on the Friday Rock Show , where they played new versions of Strangers on the Shore and Down the Road as well as the new songs Hold on to Love and Fallen Star . The group was able to convince Heavy Metal Records, whereupon work on the debut album began in early 1982. For this, the bassist Martin Owen and the drummer Mark Biddiscombe were added as new members. The album was released in the middle of the year under the name Predator . The band was disappointed with the low success of the album and blamed the label for this. It knows how to advertise a product, but the band was not given enough time in the studio, which was at the expense of quality. The band had five days to record ten songs, and there were also problems with editing, which the band had no influence on.

As a result, the Tommey siblings changed the cast again greatly. Bill Knowles returned to the band as drummer, while Frank Quegan took over vocals and Mike Frazer took over bass. In the first half of 1983 the demo Out of My Mind was released , but Heavy Metal Records could not convince to release a second album. The band then began negotiations with Neat Records and Bullet Records , which, however, did not lead to anything. Instead, the EP No More Chances was released in 1983 , which contains the song of the same name, Overnight and Ice Angels . The first two songs are included on the previous demo and have been reworked for the EP, while the latter song was an older one. In the following time, the band continued their search for a label and left, with the exception of an inclusion of the out-of-my-mind song Ain't Life a Bitch on the Roadrunner Records sampler 12 Commandments in Metal in 1985 , hardly hear from themselves. After a demo had been recorded, which contains the new songs Dawn of Destruction and Roundabout revised songs, the band reached a contract with the American label King Klassic Records . In early 1986, the group began recording the second album before it was released that year under the name Invaders . The sound carrier consisted of already known material. Since the US label did not sell the album in the UK or in other parts of Europe , the album received little attention, whereupon the band broke up towards the end of the year. The Toomey brothers then formed the band Flashpoint in 1987.

After the breakup, GI Records secured the last recordings of the band and planned a release of Invaders in the UK. Eventually the album was re-recorded after the Toomey brothers hired drummer Paul Smith. They also experimented with the use of keyboardist Dave Osbeldiston. The recordings were finished in late 1988 before the album was released the following year, with three songs being replaced by others. The album only contains a total of nine instead of ten songs, with Destroyer , Alligator and The Cry being previously unreleased songs.

In February 2005 the band got together again and began work on a new album. After the release of several compilations , the album UDUVUDU was released in April 2008 . In addition, the band played several concerts, including in April 2009 at the British Steel Festival . In May 2009 bassist Daniel “DBasser” McNamee left the band to devote himself to photography and was replaced by Daniel “Macca” McNamee. In July, the band went to The Ecology Studio with producer Chris Tsangarides to record the Simon & Garfunkel cover The Sound of Silence and the songs What Loving Means and Red Skies , which were released as single in September. In January and July 2010, the band went to the studio with Chris Tsangarides to record their next album before it was released in September 2011. In the meantime, the band held performances, such as in October 2010 at the Heavy Metal Maniacs Festival in Hoorn, the Netherlands . In April 2012 the group performed at the British Steel Festival in London .

style

According to Malc Macmillan in The NWOBHM Encyclopedia , the single Always Ready (for Love) is comparable to the works of Buffalo , Sparta and Battleaxe . The album Predator offers ordinary Metal, in which you can hear similarities to Tank and Chainsaw. Invaders offer variable and powerful music that can be classified between Jameson Raid and Trident.

The International Encyclopedia of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal by Tony Jasper and Derek Oliver assigned the band to hard rock.

Martin Popoff noted in The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal Volume 2: The Eighties for the Predator that there are bad riffs on this, with music that is poorly mixed and without focus and density. The band can be classified between Praying Mantis , Black Rose and Wolf . On Invaders , the group mixes hard rock with pomp rock and melodic rock and sounds like Magnum and Nightwing minus the keyboards. He also compared the group to Satan , Blind Fury and Demon .

Andreas Schöwe from Metal Hammer wrote in his review of The First Temptation that the band was one of the hopefuls of the first wave of British heavy metal. On the compilation there is Hard Rock reminiscent of Def Leppard , which has a slight influence from Sleaze Rock . The music is for fans of Praying Mantis, Tygers of Pan Tang , Saxon , Angel Witch and the US band Angel .
