Truthdig

Truthdig is a journalistic website founded in 2005 by Zuade Kaufman and Robert Scheer .

Foundation and goals

Both Scheer and Kaufman worked for the regional editions Westside Weekly and Our Times of the Los Angeles Times . After the Times went through a change of ownership and was taken over by the Tribune Company in 2000 , there were internal budget changes. The regional editions, for which Scheer and Kaufman mainly worked, were discontinued. After Kaufman graduated from the University of Southern California , she co-founded Truthdig with Scheer.

A primary goal was to create a platform with Truthdig that should be free of any business interests. The influence by governments or the advertising industry should be completely excluded. According to Truthdig, his reporting is politically progressive . Like a large number of alternative media in the United States , Truthdig is therefore classified in the spectrum of free and independent media .

Operated is the site of the Truthdig, LLC ., Which is headquartered in Santa Monica ( California has).

The design of the website is similar to a weblog . Their motto is drill beneath the headlines ( German for: drill below the headlines ).

Authors

The numerous supporters and donors include well-known people such as Daniel Ellsberg , Max Blumenthal , Scott Ritter , Amy Goodman , Greg Palast , Juan Cole , Gore Vidal , John Dean and Sam Harris .

In October 2006 the website published a 660-page essay by Kevin Tillman entitled " After Pat's Birthday ". Tillman is the brother of US soldier Pat Tillman , who was killed in Afghanistan . The essay gained widespread awareness through its reporting. The Associated Press and the New York Times reported on it.

In 2013, Truthdig published The Last Letter , an open letter written by Tomas Young , addressed to the 46th  Vice President of the United States , Dick Cheney , and the 43rd President of the United States , George W. Bush . Young referred to Cheney and Bush as war criminals in the open letter because of their direct involvement in the Iraq war . The letter gained worldwide fame because it was translated and published by many media.  

Awards

In 2009, 2010 and 2011, Truthdig cartoonist Dwayne Booth (also known as "Mr. Fish") received the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi Award in the Editorial Cartooning - Online Independent category . In 2012 Truthdig won the Webby Award for the fifth time , this time in the “Best Political Website” category.
