Tryphena Harbor is a natural harbor on Great Barrier Island , east of the North Island of New Zealand . The island is still part of the Auckland Council urban area.

Origin of name

The name of the natural harbor was borrowed from the brig Tryphena , which called Great Barrier Island more frequently in the 19th century when coming from New South Wales . European settlers initially named the bay Tofino , after the Spanish navigator Vicente Tofiño de San Miguel , but later took the name of the ship. In the Māori language , the natural harbor Te Rangitāwhiri Whanga is called.

geography

The Tryphena Harbor is located on the southwest coast of Great Barrier Iceland , about 81 km north-east of the center of Auckland and about 20 km north-east of the tip of the Coromandel Peninsula . The natural harbor has a depth of around 2.5 km and a maximum width of 3.2 km. The semicircular body of water opens to the southwest and has a port entrance of almost 2 km. With a few bays, the coastline of the natural harbor measures around 9.3 km.

In the small bay of Puriri Bay , at the end of the natural harbor, there is the small settlement Tryphena and about 2 km south of it in Shoal Bay is the pier for the ferries to Auckland . All ship connections with Great Barrier Island are handled via the pier .

tourism

In addition to water sports, the natural harbor also offers dolphin watching and hiking in the surrounding mountains.
