Habit and flowers

Vegetative characteristics

The southern alpine tulip is a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of growth of 8 to 45 centimeters. Their bulbs are egg-shaped, usually have a few straight hairs on the inside at the tip and often have subterranean runners. The bare, leafy and usually single-flowered stem is no thicker than 2 millimeters in diameter. The two to three mostly alternate leaves are gray-green, somewhat fleshy, runny and narrow. The lowest leaf is less than 1.2 inches wide.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from April to June. The flowers are nodding before they open. The six free, sloping bracts are yellow, the outer crimson to gold colored overflowing, the inner with a dark vertical stripe. The six stamens are shorter than the bracts, somewhat broadened and ciliate at the base. The scar is three-lobed. The seeds are flat.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24, 36 or 48.

Occurrence

The subspecies Tulipa sylvestris subsp. australis occurs in southern and southeastern Europe as well as in Russia, it is rarer in the central Mediterranean area . In Switzerland it reaches the northern limit of its distribution in Upper Valais . It occurs there on mountain meadows at altitudes of 800 to about 2000 meters.
