Turhan Baytop

Turhan Baytop (born June 20, 1920 in Üsküdar , † June 25, 2002 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish pharmacologist and botanist . Its botanical author abbreviation is " T.Baytop ".

Baytop studied at the Eczacı Okulu (School of Pharmacy ) in Istanbul until 1948 . In 1948 he received his doctorate on the phytochemical investigation of sea ​​pigeons . From 1951 to 1952 he studied at the Pharmaceutical Faculty in Paris. In 1963 he became professor of pharmacognosy at Istanbul University . There he was dean of the pharmaceutical faculty from 1963 to 1987 . Baytop retired in 1987 .

Baytop collected more than ten thousand dried plants, which were added to the Istanbul University herbarium . He also donated other plant samples to the herbaria of the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and the Edinburgh Botanical Gardens . He was mainly concerned with the identification of plants from Turkey. In particular, he was interested in those with medical value, such as B. Timeless , thimble and poppy seeds . He also specialized in the corms of the lily , iris and daffodil families .

Baytop was married to Asuman Baytop , who was also a professor. Both of their daughter Feza Günergun are now science historians. Various plants were named after Baytop or the Baytop couple, for example. B. Allium baytopiorum , Astragalus baytopianus , Colchicum baytopiorum , Crocus baytopiorum , Galium baytopiorum , Nepeta baytopii and Stachys baytopiorum .
