Turhan Selçuk

Turhan Selçuk (* 1922 in Milas ; † March 11, 2010 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish political cartoonist . He is considered one of the most famous and important caricaturists in Turkey and the founder of the modern direction of Turkish caricature. Because of his drawing style, he is known as the "Turkish Picasso of Caricature".

Short biography

He published his first cartoon in 1941 in several regional newspapers in Adana and Istanbul . In 1943 he founded the humor paper Akbaba . 1951 his works were exhibited for the first time. A short time later he founded the satirical magazine .41 Bucuk . Since 1954, Selçuk's works can be found regularly in national daily newspapers in Turkey (including Aydede, Yon, Devrim Ornegi, Yeni istanbul, Milliyet , Akşam ), where he was in part chief cartoonist. The adventures of the amiable and bizarre figure of "Abdül Canbaz" he created (typically on a penny farthing) made him very well known in Turkey and popular with the reading public. With his exhibition “Human Rights” in 1992, his international fame also increased.

Because of his social criticism, Selçuk was repeatedly censored, imprisoned, tortured and subjected to several legal proceedings until his death in Turkey. Outside Turkey, he was awarded two honorary doctorates and he has received numerous national and international prizes and the like. a. the Sedat Simavi Prize for Fine Arts (1984). His works can be found in several museums, including the USA, Canada and Europe.

His brother was the journalist İlhan Selçuk . According to their wills, both were buried together near the Hajji-Bektash-Türbe .

“Beyond the propaganda. Works by the Turkish cartoonist Turhan Selçuk ”. Exhibited for several years, including in 2006 in the Art Center Berlin , in 2008 on the occasion of the Frankfurt Book Fair in the Johann Christian Senckenberg University Library , then in Marburg Town Hall, Offenbach Town Hall and in the branch of the Goethe Institute in Schwäbisch Hall.
