The Erlkron tower ruin (also for short: Erlkron ) in Glücksburg near Flensburg at Schwennaustraße 46 is an old art ruin that is one of the cultural monuments of Glücksburg .

Establishment and designation

As a final at the end of the 19th century remains of Duburg - ruins were demolished in neighboring Flensburg, who acquired romantic assessed Glücksburger Heinrich hate some of the handmade bricks. The former volunteer of the Franco-German War (1870-1871) built in 1900 in his garden on a hill on Schwenautal from the stones, the artificial ruins of a medieval acting castle tower , which is arranged at different heights, pointed arch window openings and upper chamber in Gothic style .

The castle tower ruins were named "Erlkron". It is unclear how this name came about. It could be related to the common alder break forests in the Schwennautal. The name can also be associated with the ballad Erlkönig , the subject matter of which was taken from Danish. The Danish word "elletræ" means alder or literally translated "alder tree". The Danish word "elle" also means an elf . The cryptic German translation "Erlkönig" from the Danish word "ellekonge" therefore means "elf king". As in the ballad Erlenkönig, the word “crown” could mean the word crown . There are various castles and palaces whose names begin with Kron-, for example the ruins of Kronburg Castle in Austria and Kronborg Castle in Denmark .

Developments after construction

In the course of time, the tower ruins developed into one of the only moderately well-known attractions of Glücksburg. Glücksburg is primarily still the luck castle in the center of tourism. Nevertheless, the tower ruins made it onto a postcard in the past .

In 1960 the Zellermann family acquired the property with the building. An architect advised Jürgen Zellermann to " blow up " the tower , it was on the most beautiful building site. The Berlin-born artist Jürgen Zellermann received the tower and built his modern house next to the tower ( location ). The family restored the garden structure and the ruins. The remnants of the landscape garden and castle tower were listed as a historical monument . The newly built house is now overgrown with clematis and ivy and surrounded by large trees, so that it fits into the landscaped park, in which there are some old fruit trees .

Around 2000 the massive masonry of the tower ruin sagged and was restored according to the instructions of the monument protection. The original battlements of the tower were not restored during the restoration.

Todays use

Around 2009 the owner, Dr. Helga Windt, Jürgen Zellermann's late partner, agreed to visit the ruin. In August 2009, Carola Rasmussen, an expert in African art , exhibited stone sculptures from Zimbabwe in the landscape garden. It should be the last time that she presented one of her traditional exhibitions with art from Africa in Glücksburg. For the Open Monument Day 2009 , in September of that year, hundreds of people visited the small property on the Schwennautal. On this occasion, paintings by Jürgen Zellermann were exhibited in the tower room of the ruin. At that time there were still African sculptures in the garden. Helga Windt, born in 1932, was a biologist. She passed away in 2014.

Presumably, the ruin can still be visited in consultation. The Erlkron ruin, enthroned on a hill, also serves as a viewing tower over the Schwennau valley below. On the one hand there is a climbable viewing platform in front of the tower and on the other hand there is the tower room to linger from, from which the ox islands in the Flensburg Fjord can be seen in good weather . There is also a holiday apartment in the residential building near the ruins. The neighboring Schwennau campsite was closed in 2016. From the bridge that still exists, the ruins can be seen well in the distance.
