Schwennau ( Danish : Svendå ) is the name of a district of Glücksburg and a small river in the north of the fishing region , which , coming from Wees near Glücksburg, receives the Munkbrarupau and then flows into the Flensburg Fjord .

background

The Schwennau was first mentioned in 1756. The name either goes back to the Danish Svineå for Schweineau or means the dwindling (ie percolating) Au (in Old Norse svina ≈ to decrease, to decrease ), as the terrain at the outlet is very swampy. In 1763 a brick factory was set up at the mouth of the small river . The brickworks on the Schwennau belonged to a large number of brickworks on the fjord that represented an important branch of industry in the Flensburg area. The remnant of the former brickworks, the Schwennauhof, located not far from the mouth of the Schwennau, is obviously the oldest building stock in the area.

The Schwennautal in front of the mouth is part of the "Flensburger Förde" landscape protection area and part of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat (FFH) "Coastal areas of the Flensburg Fjord from Flensburg to Geltinger Birk". This also includes the FFH sub-area "Munkbrarupau- und Schwennautal". The Erlkron tower ruins , which were built at the beginning of the 20th century, are located in the Schwennau valley . Immediately at the mouth of the Schwennau, a small campsite was set up after the Second World War , which lasted until the beginning of the 21st century. The Glück holiday home area is now in sight . A restaurant was also built on the site of the former campsite in 2019. The neighboring Schwennauhof served as a youth recreation center for over fifty years, up to 2010. Then the farm was converted into a holiday resort . In the district of Schwennau there are also the Moos property (east of Schwennauhof), the Blocksberg street (on a hill with single-family houses, south of Schwennauhof) and the Friedeholz forest .
