location

The half-timbered house , house number 166 until 1878 , stands on the edge of the historic Bad Salzufler city center, on the corner of Turmstrasse  and Wenkenstrasse , around 400 meters northeast of the Salzhof.
Until the 19th century , next to the building on the road to Wüsten and Vlotho, there was the "Heßkamper Tor", one of the four city gates of the Salzufler city fortifications. Remnants of the city wall can still be seen up Turmstrasse up to the Katzenturm .

History and description

In 1630/32 the merchant and mayor Georg Schröder had the three-storey, gable-free half-timbered house built with partial basement. Its layout was essentially determined by the steeply sloping terrain on the one hand towards Dammstrasse or Salze , on the other hand towards the oat market . With a length of almost 19 meters , the house received eleven containers , which were, however, executed in different shapes, the hall turned towards the city gate, and a two-storey aisle adjoined the Wenkenstrasse.

Around 1800 and 1871, extensive renovations and extensions (windows, barn, veranda) took place, the hallway and inscription archway were abandoned. This archway, which was thought to have disappeared for many years and was kept in the town and bath museum after its rediscovery, now adorns the side barn extension of the house in Turmstrasse.

The inscriptions on the archway read
G L OR I A S I T D EO PA XI N TERRA. ET HO MI N I B V S BONA V O LV NTAS
Glory to God, peace on earth and a pleasure to people
PR I N CI P IVM D E V S AETERN V S F I N I SQ V E BEAT V S
The beginning is at the same time the eternal God and a blessed end
The two inscriptions are designed as so-called chronograms : Adding the Roman numerals of the larger letters (I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000) results in the The year 1630. The lower inscription is also written as a hexameter , a classic meter of epic poetry , and thus a chronostichon (= a chronogram, the text of which follows the meter of the hexameter).

Around 1860, the councilor and later Mayor of Salzufler Friedrich Capellen (1792–1867) bought properties 196, 195 and 194 (= Turmstrasse 21, 19, 17) and ran a cigar factory here , which over time became the largest of its kind developed in the Principality of Lippe (1862: 16 rollers and 14 assistants; 1878: 41 employees and 6 employees). After his death, his son Ferdinand (1833–1911) and later Wilhelm Schuseil (1851–1921) continued the company.

Wilhelm Schuseil, he gave the house its name, the ownership changed to H. Squire and 1967 in the town of Bad Salzuflen, she taught at the "House Schuseil" the youth center " Litfaß " one: live performances, disco and cellar, theater performances, a women's culture cafe and cabaret made the "Haus Schuseil" famous far beyond the Bad Salzufler city limits.

Todays use

After the house had been vacant since 2002, the city sold it to a Lemgo-based company in 2004 for a symbolic price of one euro with the condition that it be restored in accordance with the listed buildings . A fundamental renovation took place in 2008/10. Since then, "Haus Schuseil" has been used as a residential building.
