Tuvia Tenenbom (* 1957 in Bnei Berak , Israel ) is an Israeli-American author , director and theater director . He is director of the Jewish Theater of New York, which he founded in 1994 .

Family and development

Tenenbom's father was a rabbi and his grandfather was a Hasidic chief rabbi. Tuvia grew up in the Me'a She'arim district of Jerusalem . At the age of 17 he was expelled from the community because he rejected the rabbi's attitude towards secular persons. Tenenbom then moved to New York City . There he studied English literature at St. John's University , dramaturgy at the City University of New York , mathematics and computer science at Touro College and also graduated as a rabbi in Jerusalem.

In 1994 he and his wife founded the Jewish Theater, the only English-speaking Jewish theater in New York City. Tenenbom is not only an impresario of the theater, but also an author and director. There, his often provocative plays such as B. The Diary of Adolf Eichmann or The Last Virgin on Islamic suicide bombers repeatedly for national and international attention. Tenenbom has been repeatedly invited to Europe, including some German theaters such as the Hamburger Kammerspiele , the Jewish Theater Hamburg, the English Theater Frankfurt and the Modern Theater Vienna. His farce The Last Jew in Europe about a Jew who wants to marry a Polish Catholic led to a complaint from the Polish embassy in Washington in 2007.

Journalistic works by Tenenbom have appeared in Die Zeit , the Corriere della Sera and Yedioth Ahronoth as well as internet magazines. From December 2011 to May 2015 he wrote in the time regular fitness column fat as a fiddle . Since March 2016, he has been writing - also in Die Zeit - the political column Alone Among People , which in some respects is a continuation of Fett like a sneaker .

Tenenbom is repeatedly perceived as provocative. In 2008, on the sidelines of a May 1st demonstration in Hamburg, he spoke to the neo-Nazi Jürgen Rieger . In another attempt to talk on the sidelines of a demonstration in Magdeburg on January 12, 2013, Tenenbom tried to provoke neo-Nazis with the Hitler salute in order to start a conversation with them.

First book and falling out with Rowohlt

Tenenbom's first book was published in 2011 in the USA and was entitled I Sleep in Hitler's Room: An American Jew Visits Germany . In it he describes a trip to Germany that he took at the invitation of the Rowohlt Verlag . He describes himself as being attracted and repulsed by Germany, and when he pretends to be someone else he repeatedly elicits anti-Semitic remarks from his interlocutors.

First of all, the German translation of the book was to appear under the title Ich bin Deutschland in Rowohlt Verlag, who had already signed the contract with Tenenbom before the trip to Germany, granted him an advance payment and had already announced the book as the upcoming top title. This did not happen, however, because there was a rift between Tenenbom and the publishing house management, whereupon the contract was terminated. From Tenenbom's point of view, the Rowohlt Verlag wanted to exercise censorship . The publisher cited the reason for the difference of opinion that there had been legal and formal problems with the manuscript. The book was finally published under the title Alone Among Germans in December 2012 by Suhrkamp Verlag .

Second Book Alone Among Jews

In 2014 Tuvia Tenenbom's second book Alone Among Jews - A Journey of Discovery through Israel was published . In it, Tenenbom makes contact with a wide variety of pro and anti-Israeli residents of Israel and Palestine and paints a multi-layered picture of the current Israel-Palestine conflict . He also grapples with German non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and journalists, whom he accuses of describing the Middle East conflict too one-sidedly and of being obsessed with the issue while other conflicts in the world are neglected.

In Israel the book was No. 1 on the bestseller lists, in Germany it was published in November 2014.

Third Book Alone Among Americans

In 2016 Tuvia Tenenbom's third book Alone Among Americans - A Journey of Discovery was published . In it Tenenbom reports on his trip through the USA .

Fourth Book Alone Among Refugees

In 2017 Tuvia Tenenbom's fourth book Alone Among Refugees - A Journey of Discovery was published . In it, Tenenbom reports on his trip through Germany and the effects of the refugee crisis on citizens , refugees and migrants . He visited refugee camps , where he reported shameful conditions, the effects of which, according to Tenenbom, "are not only individually devastating, but will affect all of German society in the not too distant future". In this context, Tenenboms also expresses itself about right and left ideologies in Germany. That is why Akif Pirinçci and Gregor Gysi, among others , have their say in the book.
