Twisteden is a district of the pilgrimage town of Kevelaer , Kleve district , in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The name Twisteden is probably derived from the Dutch "tussen twee steden" (between two cities). A second possible name origin could be derived from the words "twee steden". In this sense, it is assumed that the town of Twisteden originated from two farms.

The two district roads 17 and 36 meet in the village . Twisteden is located southwest of the main town.

The village is also home to the Irrland amusement park, which is known far beyond its borders .

history

Twisteden was first mentioned in a landmaster's account in 1342. In 1471 the parish church of St. Quirinus was built in place of the former chapel . It belonged to the Walbeck parish until the 16th century . In 1763 there were 52 farms in the village. At the beginning of the 19th century, a post mill was built in the area . It burned down in 1860 and was replaced by a stone windmill . In 1919 there were 115 houses in Twisteden. A new and therefore larger church was consecrated in 1925. The old church now serves as a cemetery chapel .

Territorial reform

On July 1, 1969, Twisteden was joined by the 1st municipal reorganization program in North Rhine-Westphalia together with the municipalities of Kleinkevelaer and Wetten des Amtes Kevelaer and the municipalities of Kervendonk , Kervenheim and Winnekendonk of the Kervenheim office of the city of Kevelaer.

On January 1, 1975, in the course of the 2nd reorganization program in North Rhine-Westphalia, the old Kleve district was merged with the former Geldern district and parts of the Moers and Rees districts to form the new Greater Kleve district on the Lower Rhine .
