action

1941, Mississippi : Willie, 8, and older brother Pete live with their parents in the village of Killegrew. Willie learns a lot from his brother, who shows him the birds in the area, many of which instinctively return to the same area over and over again, and both of them collect eggs. In the evening they sneak to the house of an old couple who have a radio. They secretly hear the news before they go to sleep, with Pete always reminding Willie not to forget his prayers. One day the news reports of the attack on Pearl Harbor . The relationship between the brothers is changing, as 19-year-old Pete is now much more withdrawn. One day he gives Willie a green heron egg , the most valuable part of his egg collection. The next day, Willie learns that Pete has volunteered for the US Army . He wants to follow Pete, but he tells him that he is too small. The next day, Pete says goodbye to his parents and Willie and gets on the bus to Memphis.

During the night, Willie packs his essentials, including the green heron egg and a penknife, and sets off on foot to Jefferson, 30 miles away. Here the Sheriff Foote sees him and takes him to his office. Because Willie insists on going to Memphis the same day because his brother is there, the sheriff organizes a bus ticket. Soon after, Willie arrives in the big city. He asks his way to the Army building and goes unnoticed into the registration rooms, where the volunteers and draftsmen report. He asks about Pete, louder and louder, until Lieutenant Hogenbeck notices him. He insensitively wants to throw Willie out, but he pulls out his pocket knife. Hogenbeck catches him while hunting him, but Willie injures him with the knife. The situation threatens to escalate until Colonel McKellog appears. He can get Willie to explain why he is here and takes him to his office. Lieutenant Hogenbeck is instructed to find Pete. He appears shortly afterwards in Colonel McKellog's office, embarrassed and angry at his brother. McKellog can calm Pete down and Pete tries to respond to the brother, explaining to him that he has to go home and that he will return. He reminds Willie not to forget his prayers and Willie replies not to forget the way home. Pete bursts into tears. He finds the way home instinctively. Colonel McKellog offers Willie to watch Pete's departure in a "silver bird", but the boy now wants to go home quickly. McKellog instructs his driver to take Willie back to Killegrew.
