Gary Tygert "Ty" Pennington (born October 19, 1965 , in Atlanta , Georgia ) is an American television presenter, model and carpenter . He became known as the presenter of the program Extreme Makeover: Home Edition , which is broadcast in Germany under the title Das Hausbau-Kommando on DMAX .

Ty Pennington was born the second son of psychologist Yvonne Burton. She separated from Pennington's father when Ty and his older brother Wynn were very young and lived as a single parent for several years before deciding to marry her new significant other. Her new husband adopted both boys and gave them the surname Pennington. Pennington grew up in Atlanta, previously in Marietta , Georgia . Ty Pennington was an unruly child who had massive problems getting through school. In an interview for E! He told Network, "When I was a kid, I took off my clothes and swung the classroom blinds." He was hyperactive and wasn't diagnosed with ADHD until he was 17 years old . She and Pennington's pediatrician were against the use of Ritalin for a long time, so the first medication was only given at the age of 19. Previously a system was used with inconsistent success.

He is the spokesman for the organization “ADHD Experts on Demand” and is maintaining his condition with Vyvanse . His mother, Yvonne Pennington, is a psychologist who specializes in the treatment of ADHD and clinical depression . She teaches other parents how to raise an ADHD child with or without medication.

He learned to work with wood at an early age. His interest in home improvement sparked when he and various neighborhood children built a three-story tree house in the neighborhood, which was designed by Pennington. From then on, he taught himself to do home improvement and rooming. After attending High School in Sprayberry Marietta, Georgia , he attended Kennesaw State University , where he graduated from the Atlanta College of Art with a basic graphic design degree.

During his final semester, Pennington was approached by a model scout and soon began a lucrative career in the field. He has traveled the world receiving print jobs for J. Crew , Swatch and Sprite , and has appeared in television commercials for Diet Coke , Levi’s , Macy’s and Bayer, among others . During his job as a model, he was active worldwide before settling in Japan , Thailand , Italy and Germany .

Pennington poured his craft skills and sense of design into a career as a set designer for the entertainment industry. He was involved in the critically acclaimed 1995 film Leaving Las Vegas, among others. However, his professional breakthrough came with The Learning Channel 's (now simply known as TLC), which aired the innovative hit show "Trading Spaces". He quickly became known for his idiosyncratic sense of humor and creative style during the four years of the show's playful designer and carpenter. Ty is also an actor. In 2003 he played Wilbur Wright in the independent film The Adventures of Ociee Nash . In 2004 he appeared in the TV series Wild Card . This was followed by a video appearance in I'm Gone by country musician Cyndi Thomson .

When ABC began developing a show that would transform homes of needy families in 7 days or less, Pennington was chosen to lead the 8-person team. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, known here as Das Hausbau-Kommando , was originally supposed to remain a 13-part special. But the show became an absolute hit and Pennington was finally in the mainstream. This resulted in an add-on contract with Sears , who sponsor the show. Pennington was while working at construction command nor from muscle strains, heat stroke and prevent food poisoning and did everything for his job to finish to. In January 2005, while working for House Construction Command in his hometown of Atlanta , Pennington underwent emergency surgery for appendicitis and taped the episode anyway. In season 7, hosting and designing, Pennington worked on the show 240-260 days a year, claiming it was the best job in the world.

Prior to partnering with Sears, Pennington was the executive director and designer of Furniture Unlimited, based in Atlanta and Los Angeles. It also lends its name to Sears, who with their own design team have created their own Ty Pennington style line. This includes bed linen, table items, bathroom accessories, furniture, garden furniture and various other home items. In addition to his involvement in design , marketing and public relations activities for Sears, Ty is also active in the Sears American Dream campaign.

Pennington published her own book, Ty's Tricks: Home Repair Secrets Plus Cheap and Easy Projects to Transform Any Room (2003). A do-it-yourself guide for home improvement. On May 15, 2007, he published the first issue of his quarterly magazine, Ty Pennington at Home . The magazine offers its fans and enthusiastic interior designers an insight into his works as well as into his committed life. Interior design techniques are described, but various aspects of design and home repair are also considered. Pennington's own advice articles include do's and don'ts, tool selection, how to build your own furniture, and comparisons between glamorous interiors and identical inexpensive decor choices. Other articles contain information on ecological decorative items, the latest electric gadgets to make life easier and many opportunities for family and social gatherings. A popular feature is the discussion between Pennington and several charities about its involvement. For example, he was visiting Hawaii and stumbled upon AccessSurfHawaii , which is a group of volunteers teaching children with disabilities surfing and other water sports. Pennington stayed there for the day, surfing with the volunteers and their children. He then approached founder Mark Marble and said, "I've visited Hawaii six times and this is the first time I've understood the true meaning of aloha ". He also helped Bayer Asprin, for which he is an avid spokesperson, launch their first Wonders of the Heart competition. The first award winner was appointed in summer 2007. He also took part in a celebrity soccer match hosted by the Olympic gold medalist Mia Hamm . The Los Angeles Children's Hospital's Bone Transplant Station benefited from the fundraiser.

Pennington has toured several Hollywood homes and workplaces. These included his own property, that of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition designer Michael Maloney, actress Constance Zimmer and TV talk show host and chef Rachel Ray. He also gives tours of projects that he has given to other celebrities, e.g. B. Mark Stines , Extra co-host Dayna Devon (with help from Michael Maloney and co-host Kelly Rippa). He hosted several "Behind the Scenes" tours of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition where he showed his work and the work of the team and production crew involved in the 7 days of transforming lives and homes.

Pennington currently resides in Venice, Los Angeles .
