The Type 4 Chi-To ( Japanese 四 式 中 戦 車 チ ト yon-shiki chūsensha chi-to 'Type 4 medium tank Chi-To') was a Japanese prototype of a main battle tank from World War II . Development began in 1943. The basic design is based on an enlarged Chi-Ha . The main armament was the Type 4 75mm cannon (a copy of the M29 Bofors 75mm FlaK). The armor was up to 75 mm in critical places and was mainly welded, with some parts being cast . The Chi-To was the most advanced Japanese tank to reach series production. The first prototype was then sent for testing in 1944. A monthly production of 20 pieces at Mitsubishi and 5 pieces at Kobe Steel was planned . In the end, only six prototypes were started, of which only two could be completed.
