The Type 4 Heavy Mortar Ha-To ( Japanese 試製 四 式 重 迫 撃 砲 ハ ト , Shisei jōnshiki jū-hakugekihō Ha-To , dt. "Prototype 4 Heavy Mortar") was a Japanese experimental tank mortar , the 1944 ( Kōki 2604, therefore the type designation) was developed by the Imperial Japanese Army .
history
In the Imperial Japanese Army, mortars with a caliber of 150 mm, such as the Type 93 , Type 96 or Type 97 , had been used since 1933 . From 1938 the Type 98 320 mm mortar was introduced, which weighed over 300 kg. In order to provide fire support to the infantry more quickly , it was decided in 1943 to mount a heavy mortar on a self-propelled gun . The first prototype was called the Type 3 300mm mortar and was completed in 1943. For the next prototype, called the Type 4 Ha-To Heavy Mortar, a 300 mm mortar was mounted on the chassis of the Type 4 Chi-So in 1944 . The tests were positive and serial production was considered. Due to the shortage of raw materials in Japan and the early end of the war in August 1945, only four Type 4 Ha-Tos were produced.
Calls
All four Type 4 Ha-Tos produced remained in Japan and did not take part in any combat missions.
technology
The Type 4 Ha-To consisted of the Type 4 Chi-So tractor and a 300 mm mortar mounted on the stern. The vehicle weighed 15 t including the mortar and had a maximum of 25 mm armor . The 121 kW, water-cooled 6-cylinder diesel engine could bring the self-propelled gun to 40 km / h at 2000 revolutions per minute. The side skirts on both sides of the loading area were folded down to fire. Then the mortar barrel was erected by the seven-man crew until the base plate was firmly on the ground. The lateral straightening range was small, otherwise the mortar was in danger of tipping over sideways. The loading process took a few minutes to get the 170 kg grenade into the barrel. The range of the mortar was about 3000 meters. For self-defense , the Type 4 Ha-To was armed with a heavy Type 97 on- board machine gun with a caliber of 7.7 mm.
