The type 2 cannon tank Ho-I ( Japanese 二 式 砲 戦 車 ホ イ , Nishiki hōsensha Ho-I ) was a Japanese infantry support tank that was developed in 1942 ( Kōki 2602, hence the type designation) and from 1944 to 1945 by the Imperial Japanese Army was used.

history

During the Second Sino-Japanese War and the beginning of the Pacific War found the army that his infantry - and tanks - Associations better fire support required. The Type 97 Chi-Ha and Type 97 Shinhōtō-Chi-Ha models introduced from 1937 had an upgraded 47-mm cannon, which had improved anti-tank performance , but showed little effectiveness when firing high-explosive ammunition against infantry . In order to remedy this deficiency, the Ho-I Type 2 cannon tank was developed in 1942 . The prototype of the Type 2 consisted of the chassis of  a Chi-Has and received as main armament a short-barreled Type 99 75 mm cannon with a caliber length of L / 23. However, when it came to production in 1944, the chassis of the Type 1 Chi-Hes was used.

In total, only 30 copies of the Type 2 were produced.

Calls

Probably all of the Type 2 produced remained in Japan and were therefore not used in any combat operations.

technology

The type 2 Ho-Is produced from 1944 on had the type 1 Chi-He chassis, on which a newly developed turret was placed, which carried the short-barreled Type 99 75 mm cannon. It fired high explosive shells weighing 6.6 kg at a muzzle velocity of 445 m / s. As secondary armament, the tank had a heavy type 97 machine gun with a caliber of 7.7 mm. The Type 2 crew consisted of five men. The V-12 diesel engine achieved an output of 184 kW at 2000 rpm. The thickness of the armor  on the front was a maximum of 50 mm.
