The type 5 Na-To ( Japanese 五 式 砲 戦 車 Go-shiki hōsensha ), also experimental 7.5 cm PAK on self-propelled gun Na-To ( Japanese 試製 七 糎 半 対 戦 車 自 走 砲 ナ ト Shisei nana-senchimētoru hantaisensha jisōhō Na-To ), was a Japanese tank destroyer that was developed in 1945 ( Kōki 2605, hence the type designation) by the Imperial Japanese Army .
history
In the course of the Pacific War it became apparent that the Japanese medium tanks such as the Type 97 Chi-Ha and the Type 97 Shinhōtō Chi-Ha were hopelessly inferior to the Allied models such as the M4 Sherman in terms of armor and armament. More heavily armored and better armed tanks such as the Type 1 Chi-He , the Type 3 Chi-Nu (50 mm armor and Type 4 75 mm chariot gun) and the Type 5 Chi-Ri were an improvement, but they were expensive of manufacture and only small numbers were produced.
In order to save costs, time and material, the first tests were carried out as early as 1942 with a tank destroyer modeled on the German Marder I. A chassis from an older tank was combined with a modern anti-tank gun . The result was the Type 5 Na-To in mid-1944 , which used the Chi-So Type 4 transport and tractor unit as a carrier . The main armament was the 75 mm type 5 chariot gun . The army command was convinced of the concept and ordered 200 copies that were to be produced in 1945. Due to the capitulation of Japan in September 1945, the production of the Type 5 did not go beyond the production of two prototypes .
