The Type-98 to 20-mm anti-aircraft half-track was an experimental Japanese Halbkettenfahrzeug for air defense , in 1942 the Japanese Imperial Army was introduced.

history

Since 1937 the armed forces of the Japanese Empire waged the Second Sino-Japanese War . By bridging great distances, the army felt increasingly challenged to motorize its infantry , artillery and anti-aircraft defenses in order to keep up with the rapid advance. In 1938 the Isuzu group delivered the half-track type 98 Ko-Hi to the army. In the same year the 20-mm automatic cannon type 98 was handed over to the troops. It was not until 1942 that the call for mobile anti-aircraft support was loud and, inspired by the German special vehicle 6 with 3.7 cm FlaK 36 , attempts were made to combine the Ko-Hi with the automatic cannon. Although the Ho-Ki proved to be a suitable vehicle and the 20 mm automatic cannon an effective anti-aircraft gun, only a few examples of the Type 98 combination were made.

technology

The Type 98 Ko-Hi tractor was a half-track vehicle with a two-wheeled front axle and a track drive in the rear, similar to the Type 1 Ho-Ha . The tractor formed a good mixture of an all-terrain vehicle and a stable substructure for the Type 98 automatic cannon. The top speed was 40 km / h. If necessary, the driver and front passenger could be protected against the elements with a canvas hood. Behind the driver's cab, the Ko-Hi had a flat, free loading area on which the machine gun, which could be swiveled through 360 °, was mounted. The ammunition was carried on a separate vehicle.
