The underground line U5 is a planned line of the Vienna underground network . It emerges from the southern section of the U2 line, which is separated from this and extended. The first plans for the project, which is now being implemented, were published in 2014, the commissioning of the U5 between the Frankhplatz and Karlsplatz stations is planned for 2025. The route from Frankhplatz to Elterleinplatz is to be extended by 2027 . Your signal color will be turquoise.

history

Earlier planning

In 1966/67, when the basic network of the Vienna subway was planned, the name U5 went to a route from Hernals over the Schottenring and the Praterstern in the direction of the stadium and Stadlauer Brücke - so to a large extent corresponding to the U2 extension in 2008 . In the early 1970s, however, this planning was abandoned in favor of branching other lines on most of this route (after experience with the U2 / U4 line, which did not work in practice in 1981, branching lines were then generally rejected). In 1973, the U5 identifier was therefore assigned to a route between Meidling Hauptstrasse, the southern belt and Schlachthausgasse, which, however, was soon abandoned, not least because it would have largely run parallel to the mainline express train line. When the U6 went into operation in 1989, the U5 designation created a gap in the numbering of Vienna's underground lines.

Current project

On June 27, 2014, city councilors Renate Brauner and Maria Vassilakou presented the U2 / U5 intersection and the associated routing of the U5 line to the public. In the first stage, the U5 is to take over the existing Karlsplatz – Universitätsstraße route from the U2 line and then receive a new Frankhplatz station ; the U2 travels through a new south branch. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on October 8, 2018 at Matzleinsdorfer Platz. The U5 line is to open in 2025 Template: future / in 5 yearsand will be operated jointly with the U2 below the two-way line for a while. Subsequently, the U5 is to run from Frankhplatz via Arne-Karlsson-Park , one of the largest tram hubs in Vienna at the Spitalgasse intersection with Währinger Straße, and Michelbeuern to Hernals and Elterleinplatz (lines 9 and 43). In a later expansion phase, the line could also be expanded to Hernals station .

A possible southern extension of the U5 could lead from Karlsplatz to Gudrunstrasse . This route was already included in the subway package presented in 2007, at that time as the new south branch of the U2 line, but was postponed in favor of the U2 / U5 intersection described above.

The turquoise color of the U5 was chosen in an online vote in August 2014.

On June 2, 2015, Wiener Linien announced that the U5 line would be the first driverless underground line in Vienna. There should be fully automatic platform screen doors in every station. In addition, Wiener Linien ordered new underground trains ( X-Wagen ) from Siemens Austria following an international tender , which can be used in driverless operation on the U5 and in the usual semi-automatic operation on the U1, U2, U3 and U4 lines. The new trains are manufactured in Simmering , the bogies come from Graz.

In November 2017, the City of Vienna announced that the start of construction and thus also of completion would be postponed by one year. One reason for the delay is the Austrian EU Council Presidency 2018 , during which important transport routes in Vienna should not be built. In November 2018 it was announced that the construction contracts for the route from the town hall to the future U5 station Frankhplatz and for those from Matzleinsdorfer Platz to Neubaugasse would be re-tendered, which resulted in a further delay of one year. This means that the U5 to Frankhplatz will open in 2025 and the new U2 to Matzleinsdorfer Platz in 2027.

architecture

The line design of the U5 was designed by the two Viennese offices Franz and YF and presented to the public on July 9, 2015. The design is based - after the line designs of U2 and U3 - again more closely on the original design of the U-Bahn architects' group (AGU) used for the lines U1 and U4 and relies on the line color as a characteristic design element. The floors are covered with granite slabs, walls and ceilings are made of enamelled sheet steel and aluminum panels. The most important innovation will be the installation of platform screen doors with a view to fully automated driving. The basic theme of their design, "accelerating and braking", is shown in differently wide color strips along the platforms. The arrangement should lead from the less bright platform areas to the lighter exits. The station entrances consist of white coated aluminum sheet and alternate with glass strips that become narrower. A longitudinal diagonal bend in the construction points downwards towards the platforms.

As the only newly built structure on the U5 for the time being, only the Frankhplatz station will have the new line design. The branch taken over from the U2 is only adapted in terms of line color and platform screen doors. This applies to the Rathaus , Volkstheater and Museumsquartier stations , which are still from the Unterpflaster tram , and the Karlsplatz terminus .

criticism

In addition to the construction costs, the traffic efficiency of a U5 is criticized. Critics complain that the problems of public transport in districts 6–9 could be solved faster and more efficiently by improving tram line 43 and reinstalling tram line 13 than with a subway.

It is also criticized that no population growth is to be expected in the area covered by a U5. This takes place in the outskirts, which cannot be adequately developed by public transport, since a U5 ties up the necessary funds.

Proponents counter that attempts to accelerate line 43 have not yet worked. A further compression of the intervals is no longer possible, even according to Wiener Linien , as the trains would otherwise get in the way. Opponents again point out that the use of vehicles with a wider loading profile or longer sets was not considered and even the number of sets used on line 43 was reduced.

Contrary to the widespread opinion that there was no population growth in the western districts, all of the affected census districts between the belt and the suburbs have recorded, in some cases significant increases, since 2001, even in comparison to the probable capacities of the new urban expansion areas in the periphery. In Hernals alone, MA 18 (urban development and urban planning) is assuming a population development from 50,867 (2005) to 65,589 (2035), i.e. an increase of 14,722, which will mainly take place in the Wilhelminian-style districts between the Gürtel and the suburbs . In the counting districts 1605, 1701, 1702, 1703 and 1803, through which a U5 would run between Michelbeuern and S-Station Hernals, 71,551 inhabitants were registered in 2011 (2001: 61,369). By 2035, MA 50 (Housing Research) is assuming a further increase of 20,101 to a total of 91,652 inhabitants. This corresponds to the expected influx of people into the urban development area Seestadt Aspern , where around 20,000 people are also expected to be at home by around 2035, but an infrastructure comparable to the belt districts does not yet exist. A west arm of the U5 with stations in Michelbeuern, at Elterleinplatz and at the Hernals S-Bahn station would open up a densely populated area with almost 100,000 inhabitants in three districts. These include some areas that have been neglected by urban development policy, such as the stagnating old factory and workers' residential area on both sides of Wattgasse . The variants discussed for the southern expansion of the U2 ( Matzleinsdorfer Platz , Meidling station ) would also result in an upgrading of “problem areas” from the Wilhelminian era.
