Hauptbahnhof underground station

The Hauptbahnhof underground station is one of the most important underground stations for the Hannover Stadtbahn . It is located northeast of Hanover's main train station under Raschplatz . The station has two directional platforms with four tracks for lines 1, 2, 3, 7, 8 (18) and 9 (10).

history

The Hauptbahnhof station was built in the early 1970s. Its exterior walls were designed by the French painter Jean Dewasne . On September 26, 1975 the station was opened for the first tram line 12 (Oberricklingen – Hauptbahnhof). On April 4, 1976, the complete A-route was opened, now the lines 3 (Oberricklingen – Lahe) and 7 (Oberricklingen – Fasanenkrug) ran. The station was initially called Hauptbahnhof / ZOB and was later renamed Hauptbahnhof .

On May 27, 1979, the B-North line was opened, so that the outer tracks of the B line were put into operation in the Hauptbahnhof station. Line 19 (Empelde – Alte Heide) changed here from the A to the B route and vice versa.

The station was equipped with two elevators in 1999 with a view to the Expo 2000 . These are located at the northern end of the platforms and connect them to the -1 level of Raschplatz . On the out of town platform, another elevator was retrofitted at the southern end of the platform, which extends to the street level of Rundestrasse.

The station is to receive another elevator at the southern end of the city-inward platform. This should only lead from the platform to the passerelle level (-1 level).

The Hanover Region Infrastructure Company has owned the Hanover subway stations since 2001 .

Station section A / B line

Artistic design

The two tracks of the A route are inside, those of the B route are on the outside of the two platforms. This enables those transferring a platform-level change between the routes. The timetables are coordinated so that an A and a B line stop at the platform at the same time.

The design of the outer walls in the style of abstract constructivism was based on designs by the French artist Jean Dewasne .

The A-route leads under the Lister Meile to the northeast to behind the Lister Platz , the B-route leads in a large curve to the north to Vahrenwalder Straße . To the south, the A and B lines run parallel to the Kröpcke station.

To the north of the station is a double-track sweeping system for the trams of line 8 that end here as well as those of the canceled line 10 in night traffic. At major trade fairs like Cebit , the lanes of event line 18 also end here. The sweeping system can be approached by all A and B lines coming from the south, but those coming from the north cannot turn here.

Between the A and B lines, there are track connections in both directions to switch between the two lines, but this is no longer practiced in regular service. The track change is located behind the platforms in the direction of travel.

Construction work on the D-route

Station part of the D line in the shell

During the construction of the tram tunnel for the A and B lines, there was a plan to build another tunnel line. Therefore, during the construction of the Hauptbahnhof underground station under the station for the A and B line, a station for the planned D line was built in the shell as a preliminary construction work . The D-route would have come from the Steintor subway station and would have been led to the east under Berliner Allee towards Südstadt .

The Hanover region , which is responsible for local transport planning, has now refrained from building the fourth tunnel. Instead, the route in the inner city area was upgraded above ground in the second half of the 2010s ( Project Ten and Seventeen ). Since September 2017, the route has led through the Lister Meile underpass to Raschplatz and ZOB . Instead of continuing to build the D-section of the subway station, two elevated platforms were built above ground near the station : Hauptbahnhof / Ernst-August-Platz in Kurt-Schumacher-Strasse in front of the Ernst-August-Galerie and as the end point and turning point Raschplatz / ZOB on Lister Meile before crossing with Berliner Allee.
