The central bus station (ZOB) Hanover is the central stop for national and international long-distance bus traffic as well as regional bus traffic from, to and via Hanover . It is located in the Mitte district on Raschplatzhochstrasse in the transition between Hamburger Allee and Berliner Allee, in close proximity to the main train station .

history

Old central bus station at the Lister triangle

Former bus station (2012)

As part of the tram expansion, a central bus station was built northeast of the main train station in 1975 and inaugurated on December 20, 1975. The site was located at the Lister Dreieck between Berliner Allee , Lister Meile and Karl-Heinrich-Ulrichs-Straße next to the VW Tower . The regional bus routes as well as coaches and isolated long-distance bus routes stopped on the approximately 5000 m² area . Until then, the various bus lines of the railway had stopped at Ernst-August Platz, the post office in the area of the post's own post bus station (from 1975 then ZOB area) and from private providers at various stops in the city center. There was an arrival stop and four departure stops, each with several stops. There was a distribution area under the central bus station, which was connected via two aisles with shops to the passerelle and the underground station. Access was provided via this distribution floor. As more and more regional lines no longer run through to the city center, but ended at the end of the tram, the importance of the central bus station decreased. As a result, the basement came down more and more until it was closed and above-ground entrances were created.

Due to the lack of equipment and the outdated sanitary facilities as well as the shabby appearance, the ZOB was discussed for years at the beginning of the 21st century. In view of the liberalization of long-distance bus traffic in Germany , a more modern central bus station had become necessary. At the end of 2012, the demolition of the barrel roofs on the old site began; after the opening of the new bus station in September 2014, the former area is no longer officially used for bus traffic. Initially, a paid short-term car park was set up there, and development was planned for the long term.

On November 15, 2014 took place at the old central bus station premises nationwide profile event "Europe against terrorist Islamism" the hooligan grouping HoGeSa with about 3,000 participants, accompanied by about 4,000 counter-demonstrators and 5,000 policemen instead.

At the beginning of 2016, the development of the area of the old location began. The new Hanover headquarters of Deutsche Bahn should be built on the site by the end of 2018 . The eight-story building should have a gross floor area of almost 30,000 square meters and provide space for around 1,100 employees. In May 2019, the 64 million euro building was handed over to Deutsche Bahn. As of May 2019, a total of 950 employees from 14 Deutsche Bahn companies should move into the offices of the building in June 2019.

New building in 2014

New building ZOB Hanover

The building permit for a new building for the central bus station was granted in September 2012, the costs amounted to around 4.3 million euros.

The new site is located next to that of the old central bus station on the corner of Lister Meile and Rundestrasse and thus directly on the tracks of the main train station. The new ZOB has eleven bus stops and a triangular red service center. Inside the service center, a waiting room with an area in the mid-double-digit square meter area offers numerous seating, luggage lockers and access to the sanitary facilities. The long side of the triangular building, facing outwards towards the bus stop area, houses the ZOB Hanover operations office, a kiosk and several ticket offices for various bus companies. Customers are protected from precipitation by the flat roof of the building, which is used as a canopy on this side. This area is partially protected by the towering 1400 m² glass flight roof , which mainly spans the bus platform and was designed by the Stuttgart architect Werner Sobek . The opening of the new central bus station took place on September 1, 2014. The new central bus station is currently operated by Deutsche Touring GmbH . The company filed for bankruptcy at the beginning of April 2017, but operations at the ZOB in Hanover will initially continue unchanged. In the following August, the company announced that CROATIA BUS / Globtour Medjugorje was joining the company as a new investor, that further business operations were consequently secured and that employees at the Hanover Central Bus Station would be taken over.
