The Gal class ( gal , Hebrew wave ) consists of diesel-electric submarines used by the Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd in Barrow-in-Furness ( England ) for the Israeli navy on the basis of the German Type 206 submarine were built .
history
The Gal- class is the first class of submarines built specifically for the Israeli Navy. Until then, Israel only had modernized boats with the design from before and during World War II .
Since their commissioning in the 1970s, the boats have been improved again and again to be on the cutting edge of technology. Like the class 206 on which they are based, they are agile and reliable ships designed primarily for fighting enemy vehicles in coastal areas. To protect against mines and detection by magnetic anomaly detectors , their shell is made of non-magnetic steel.
After the introduction of the Dolphin class , they were initially assigned to the reserve; but then a ship was scrapped, while the two remaining units should be thoroughly modernized for the purpose of resale at the Howaldtswerke .
On October 11, 2007, the Gal was transported to Haifa to the local Naval Museum of the Navy and is open to the public. Two doors were added to port to facilitate access to the interior. Nothing is known about the whereabouts of the third unit.
