The U. Diciotti (identification: CP 941), often just called Diciotti , is a multi-purpose ship of the Italian coast guard .

history

The ship, the second of Dattilo class was on January 9, 2013, the shipyard Fincantieri in Castellammare di Stabia placed on Kiel . It was launched on July 15, 2013 and put into service on March 20, 2014. It was named after Major General of the Italian Coast Guard Ubaldo Diciotti . It is used for sea rescue and environmental protection . In the event of a catastrophe, it can also be used to manage operations .

In July 2014, helped Diciotti about to the transfer of the stricken cruise liner Costa Concordia to back to Genoa. After that, it was mainly used to rescue migrants. The Diciotti had rescued around 5,000 migrants by 2017.

In June 2018, the new Italian government closed the ports of Italy to private rescue ships. The tugboat Vos Thalassa , flying the Italian flag, rescued 67 migrants (58 men, three women and six children) in July 2018. Some rescued people violently protested against being handed over to the Libyan coast guard . The team then called the Italian coast guard for help and the Diciotti took the migrants on board on July 10, 2018. The Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini then closed the ports for the Diciotti . On July 12, the Diciotti docked in the port of Trapani . The migrants were only allowed to leave the ship after intervention by the Italian President Mattarella .

On August 16, the Diciotti rescued 190 migrants. 13 of them were brought to Lampedusa for medical treatment . Salvini refused to allow her to enter an Italian port, and Malta also refused to allow her to dock. The Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) spoke out in favor of no longer allowing ships with rescued migrants on board to dock in any EU country. On the night of August 21, 2018, the Diciotti entered the port of Catania ( Sicily ); Salvini did not want to let the people go ashore as long as there were no “answers from Europe”.

On August 23, 2018, Luigi Di Maio (Chairman of M5S and Deputy Prime Minister ) put pressure on the participants at the EU Commission's meeting on August 24, 2018. Among other things, he threatened to suspend Italian payments to the EU amounting to 20 billion euros a year. At the meeting, representatives from other EU countries, including Germany, France, Spain and Austria, wanted to find structural solutions for ships in the Mediterranean, which is why there was no agreement for the Diciotti .

Initially only 27 minors were allowed to go ashore; 150 migrants had to stay on board. On August 25, a health authority ordered 16 of them to leave the Diciotti because of suspected tuberculosis. On the morning of August 26, 2018, the remaining 134 people were allowed to go ashore. According to Prime Minister Conte, Albania is taking in 20 of them and Ireland is also taking in 20. The Catholic Church is taking care of the remaining 100 or so people. The Agrigento public prosecutor's office started investigations against Interior Minister Salvini, among other things for deprivation of liberty and abuse of power; however, no trial was reached because the Senate did not lift Salvini's immunity in March 2019 . On August 27, Deputy Prime Minister Di Maio ( M5S ) said Italy would veto the next seven-year financial plan (which the EU plans to adopt before the European elections in May 2019 ) if the immigration situation does not change in the near future.
