The UAZ-469 ( Russian УАЗ-469 ), in later versions also referred to as UAZ-3151 , is an all-terrain vehicle made by the Soviet or Russian manufacturer Uljanowski Avtomobilny Sawod (UAZ for short) from Ulyanovsk . The UAZ-469 was mainly used by the Soviet Army as well as other armed forces of the Warsaw Pact states . In the Soviet Union, it was also widely used in almost all government organizations that had a need for robust off-road vehicles.

There were prototypes of the UAZ-469 at the beginning of the 1960s. The first examples were completed in 1961 and the test phase was completed in 1962. However, there was no series production.

Series production of the UAZ-469 began in 1972, it replaced the GAZ-69 that had been built up until then . To demonstrate the off-road capabilities of the vehicles, a test drive on Elbrus was undertaken in 1974 with a total of three near-series UAZ-469B . The vehicles reached a height of 4200 meters within 38 minutes.

A revision took place in 1985, with the name of the vehicle being changed to UAZ-3151 due to new standards. In the 1990s, versions with XD2 diesel engines from Peugeot were also sold. The vehicle was also marketed as the Tundra 469 on various occasions .

Production was discontinued in November 2003 and its successor was the visually very similar UAZ Hunter .

The German Democratic Republic imported the vehicles from 1974, they were used both civilly and militarily. They were to be found in forestry and agriculture as well as in the People's Police , the People's Police Readiness , the fighting groups of the working class and civil defense . A total of around 2500 of the off-road vehicles came to the GDR. Some of them - mainly from vehicles used in agriculture - were converted to Cunewald diesel engines of type 4 VD 8.8 / 8.5 (used in the Multicar 25 ) due to the excessive fuel consumption .

Model variants

In the more than 30 years of production history, various versions of the off-road vehicle have been built. Accordingly, the following list is not exhaustive and only provides an overview of the most important variants.

  • UAZ-469 - Version built for the military from 1972 to 1985 with 300 millimeters ground clearance and portal axles.
  • UAZ-469B - from 1973 to 1985 mass-built version with rigid axles and a ground clearance of just 220 millimeters. Intended for all civil purposes.
  • UAZ-469BG - medical version .
  • UAZ-3151 - Revised version of the UAZ-469 built from 1985. There were changes, especially in the technical area, including the gearbox and the axles. The ground clearance of 300 millimeters was retained.
  • UAZ-31512 - Civilian version, successor to the UAZ-469B. Without reduction gears and various military accessories.
  • UAZ-3152 - medical version and successor to the UAZ-469BG.
  • UAZ-39121 - version specially designed for veterinary purposes.
  • UAZ-3150 - two-door version with a short wheelbase, three-liter engine and various technical improvements. It is unclear whether series production took place.
  • UAZ-31514 - variant with a metal roof. There was the possibility of installing ZMZ diesel engines with a displacement of 2.89 l.
  • UAZ-31519 - version with a metal roof, 2.9-liter engine and various minor changes to the electrical system.
  • UAZ-3153 - model with an extended wheelbase and a 2.89 liter engine. This makes 98 hp.
  • UAZ-3159 - Improved UAZ-3153 with various optical and technical revisions. It is unclear whether there was series production.

In addition, various functional models and prototypes were produced before production actually started. The sources are not entirely in agreement as to whether the successor UAZ Hunter is a new model or just a revision. While there were almost no changes in appearance, the technical parameters of the vehicles (weight, engine and dimensions) differ significantly from each other.
