The Harold E. Holt (DE / FF-1074) was a Knox-class frigate . She served in the United States Navy from 1971 to 1992 . It was named after Harold Holt (born August 5, 1908 in Sydney , † December 19, 1967), the 17th Australian Prime Minister .
history
The Harold E. Holt was laid down on May 11, 1968 at Todd Pacific Shipyards in San Pedro , California . The launch took place on May 3, 1969, the commissioning with the Navy on March 26, 1971.
The ship was assigned to the Pacific Fleet, the home port was Pearl Harbor . In May 1975, the Holt was involved in the rescue of the Mayaguez , which had been kidnapped by the Khmer Rouge and its crew.
The frigate was decommissioned on July 2, 1992, and remained in the Navy's register of ships until January 11, 1995. The Harold E. Holt was sunk on July 10, 2002 during the SINKEX 2002 by the USS Paul F. Foster .
