Ubaldo Nieto

Ubaldo "Uba" Nieto (* around 1920 in Puerto Rico ; † unknown) was a Puerto Rican-American percussionist ( timbales ).

Nieto comes from a musical family. He moved to the United States to work as a pianist before taking up various percussion instruments and taking lessons from Henry Adler. His brother Johnny Nieto played saxophonist with Machito in the early 1940s before he brought Ubaldo Nieto into his Afro-Cuban band. In early 1947 he took part in recordings of the Machito Orchestra (with Chano Pozo ) for the first time . In the following years he worked a. a. also with Norman Granz ( The Jazz Scene ), Artie Shaw , Percy Faith , Mitch Miller , Charlie Parker ( Mambo / Lament for the Congo ), Chico O'Farrill , Billy Taylor , Frank Morgan , Count Basie , Dizzy Gillespie ( Afro , 1956 ), Art Blakey ( Orgy in Rhythm , 1957), Johnny Richards and with Tito Rodríguez & His Orchestra. In the field of jazz he was involved in 54 recording sessions between 1947 and 1960, most recently in an all-star big band ( Al “Jazzbo” Collins Presents Swinging at the Opera ). Tito Puente praised his talent: “ No one else could play the way he played timbales ".
