The shore horsetail ( Equisetum × litorale ) is a hybrid of field horsetail ( Equisetum arvense ) and pond horsetail ( Equisetum fluviatile ) from the genus Horsetail ( Equisetum ).

description

The shore horsetail is a perennial plant and reaches heights of 20 to 100 centimeters. The stem is simple, branched, 4 to 5 mm thick, sometimes unbranched at the top and slightly grooved. The central cavity is 1/6 to 1/2 the diameter of the stem. The Vallecular caves are the same size as the central caves. Each vascular bundle, also called the carinal cavity, is surrounded by an endodermis , so no cylinder can be seen when it breaks. The leaf sheaths are bell-shaped with approx. 12 teeth and up to 12 mm long. Ears of wheat are seldom present and they always remain closed.

Spore ripening is from June to July. The spores are numb , they have no appendage.

Occurrence

In Germany it is scattered in western Baden-Wuerttemberg , in Saxony , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , Schleswig-Holstein , rarely in Bavaria , Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland , North Rhine-Westphalia , Hesse , in southern Thuringia , in Saxony-Anhalt , in south-western Brandenburg and in Berlin . Its general distribution in Germany is insufficiently known.

The horsetail inhabits moist to wet meadows, ditches and banks, and seeped embankments.
