Athletic career

Nussbaumer comes from the youth of SSV Ulm 1846 , for whom he made his debut in the third-class 1st Amateur League Württemberg in the early 1970s and played for promotion to the then second-class regional league . As champion of the Nordwürttemberg relay in the 1976/77 season before the promoted SB Heidenheim , he qualified alongside Dieter Kohnle , Alexander Pietsch , Walter Kubanczyk and Günter Berti for the promotion games to the 1974 2nd Bundesliga , but failed there behind the Freiburg FC, however, with only three points tied with SV Neckargerach at the bottom of the table. In the following season, the success in the league was repeated and runner-up SV Göppingen distanced by six points, once again the team - this time second behind SC Freiburg - missed promotion to the second division in the promotion round.

However, Nussbaumer's team had qualified for the newly founded Oberliga Baden-Württemberg . Under coach Klaus-Peter Jendrosch , the team became the first league champions, in 33 season games he had contributed eight goals this season to the associated promotion to the second division. After 13 appearances and two goals in his first second division season, he ran in 29 games in the southern season in the 1980/81 season and scored two goals again. Despite the achieved 5th place in the table, he and the team just missed relegation, because due to the merging of the two second division relays only the first four places were sufficient for safe qualification and a point system based on the last three seasons was used for all others.

Under coach Werner Kern , Nussbaumer's team won the championship directly in the 1981/82 league season , and in the subsequent promotion round, the team failed just behind FC Augsburg . While the Ulm team drew 1-1 in the away game against FC 08 Homburg on the last day of the match , the Fuggerstädter defeated FSV Frankfurt , who had already been promoted, 3-0 and overtook the sparrows due to the goal difference that was one goal better . In the following season, the league championship was repeated, but Nussbaumer had only played ten games. Although the team around Ralf Rangnick , Michael Nushöhr , Walter Modick , Erich Steer and Maximilian Hauck succeeded in returning to the 2nd Bundesliga, he ended his career.
