Uli Schwarz (born July 10, 1934 in Biberach an der Riss ; † December 21, 2006 ) was a German biologist. He worked for the Max Planck Society (MPG). After studying pharmacy in Tübingen , he started working as a doctoral student at the Institute for Biology in Tübingen of the MPG in 1960. In 1963 he completed a doctorate with his thesis Specific effects the action of penicillin on Escherichia coli as from. This work marked the beginning of several studies on the biochemistry of bacterial cell wall growth.

From 1963 to 1969 he worked as a scientific assistant in the Institute of Biology, and from 1969 to 1974 he took over the management of the Friedrich Miescher Laboratory of the MPG. In 1974 he was appointed Scientific Member at the Max Planck Institute for Virus Research , where he assumed the position of director. From 1974 he took over a directorate at this institute, now renamed the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology, until his retirement in 2002. Here he worked as head of the department for biochemistry. In 1972 he was a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) at the Pasteur Institute in Paris . He was appointed a member of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science at the National Institute for Genetics in Mishima (Shizuoka) in 1984.

He was appointed honorary professor at the University of Tübingen in 1985 . Since 1987 he has cooperated with the Shanghai Institute of Cell Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and since 1996 with the Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing . During a visit to the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1999, he was received by Chinese Prime Minister Zhu Rongji .

In 2002 he became the founding director of the Shanghai Institute For Advanced Studies in Shanghai with Professor Rao Yi . His scientific research focused on the biochemistry of the bacterial cell wall. His work on the mode of action of penicillin , which has received worldwide attention, particularly stands out here. Another area of work was the study of cell-cell interactions in the development of neuronal structures, a central topic in neurobiology.

On October 16, 2008, the guest research laboratory of the Shanghai Institute of Biological Sciences (SIBS) was renamed the Uli-Schwarz Research Laboratory to honor the scientist's pioneering work in cooperation between Germany and China.
