Ulisse Caputo (born November 4, 1872 in Salerno , † October 13, 1948 in Paris ) was an Italian genre painter, engraver and sculptor who worked in Paris.

Caputo received his first drawing lessons in Cava dei Tirreni from the painter Riccardo Alfieri , encouraged by his father, a set designer at the Teatro Verdi.

Caputo studied at the Accademia di belle arti di Napoli with Domenico Morelli and Filippo Palizzi and sculpture with Stanislao Lista . He also received lessons from Gaetano Esposito . From 1897 he took part in Italian art exhibitions.

In 1899, Caputo moved to Paris and became a member of the circle of Italian artists who lived in the French capital. He became friends with Pietro Scopetta , Arnaldo De Lisio , Lionello Balestrieri , Giovanni Boldini , Federico Zandomeneghi and Leonetto Cappiello .

At first, the Italian artist had to be content with working as an illustrator in order to earn a living.

Caputo became a supporter of Italian divisionism , an offshoot of pointillism .

Caputo traveled from 1910 to 1913 several times in the Brittany to the Pont-Aven School of Paul Gauguin and the Nabis know. The four years in Aix-en-Provence from 1918 to 1922, during which Caputo befriended Paul Cézanne's widow, were important .

He participated in many art exhibitions: Cairo 1904, Milan 1906, Venice 1907 and Buenos Aires 1910.

In 1924 he went on a study trip to Morocco on behalf of the French government. He became known not only in France, but also in Italy and other European countries, as well as Argentina , Chile , Egypt and the United States .

Caputo was made a Knight of the Italian Crown and held his last solo exhibition in Naples in 1936.
