Ullrich Bewersdorff

Ullrich Bewersdorff (born January 5, 1920 in Bornzin , Stolp district ; † December 20, 2008 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German painter , graphic artist , medalist and university drawing teacher.

Life

Born as a teacher's son in a small town in Western Pomerania, he discovered his interest and passion for art when he was still at high school. He studied from 1939 to 1940 and 1942 to 1943 at the Institute for Art Education in Berlin and from 1948 to 1950 at Burg Giebichenstein and at the Martin Luther University in Halle. His teachers were Conrad Felixmüller , Karl Rössing , Erwin Hahs , Fritz Freitag, Herbert Post , Gustav Weidanz , Curt Lahs and Wilhelm Worringer .

After completing his studies in the field of art, Ullrich Bewersdorff took his first position (1950–1960) at the Francke Foundations in Halle as an art teacher. In 1962, Ullrich Bewersdorff took over from Felixmüller as a lecturer at the Martin Luther University, the only one in Germany to be called a "university drawing teacher". In 1985 teaching at the university ended with subsequent retirement, and Benno Schulz became his successor . From 1994 to 1998 Bewersdorff was politically active as a city councilor for the FDP in the Halle city council.

In addition to teaching, Bewersdorff created a number of paintings and portraits. With woodcuts, oil paintings, bookplates , drawings and watercolors, he became known as an artist nationwide. Ullrich Bewersdorff had exhibitions in many European countries. During his creative period 185 bookplates were created, preferably in black and white woodcut technique.

In 1974 he received the art prize of the city of Halle.
