The red elm is a medium-sized deciduous tree with a broad crown that reaches a height of 20 meters. Twigs and buds are red-brown and coarsely hairy. The inner bark of twigs and branches is slimy and has an aromatic taste. The leaves are oblong ovoid to oblong lanceolate, 10 to 20 centimeters long, pointed or pointed with a strongly asymmetrical base. The leaf margin is double serrated, the upper side is rough, the underside is hairy white. The petiole becomes 4 to 8 millimeters long. The flowers are short stalked and stand in dense upright clusters. Five to nine stamens are formed, the stigmas are reddish. Flowering time is from March to April. The fruits are broadly ellipsoidal to spherical, 1 to 2 centimeters thick nut fruits . The seeds are hairy russet and have a weakly incised wing edge.

The distribution area of ​​the red elm stretches from eastern Canada over the northern and southern Prairie States to Florida. There you can find it as a mixed tree species in deciduous forests in floodplains and riparian woodland on moderately dry, fresh or moist, neutral to alkaline, sandy-gravelly and very nutrient-rich soils in sunny locations. It is frost hardy and loves warmth. They are often found in association with the white ash ( Fraxinus americana ), the American white oak ( Quercus alba ), the American linden ( Tilia americana ), the tulip tree ( Liriodendron tulipifera ) and the sugar maple ( Acer saccharum ).
