Ulrich Cavelti

Ulrich Augustinus Cavelti-Scherrer (born April 28, 1947 in Gossau , canton St. Gallen ; legal resident in Sagogn , canton Graubünden ; † August 3, 2018 ) was a Swiss lawyer . He was regarded as a renowned financial and tax lawyer in Switzerland.

Life

Ulrich Cavelti came from a Graubünden book printer family; he was born in Gossau, the second of six children. He attended the Friedberg grammar school and the Engelberg college . At the University of Freiburg , he studied law and became a jurisprudential thesis on influence of the Enlightenment on the Swiss state-church law to Dr. iur. PhD.

After completing his studies, he first became head of the legal service in the finance department of the canton of St.Gallen. In 1978 he became department secretary. From 1992 to 2012 he was President of the Administrative Court of the Canton of St. Gallen.

He was also a part-time federal judge at the Federal Supreme Court in Lausanne until 2005 , and he was also involved in four intercantonal appeals commissions and various federal expert commissions. Until his death he was legal advisor to the conference of cantonal finance directors.

From 1980 he taught public law at the University of St. Gallen , since 2005 as adjunct professor. In 2013 he gave his farewell lecture on the subject of “Tax federalism in an intercantonal and international focus”.

Cavelti was a Catholic and a member of the Christian Democratic People's Party (CVP) in the canton of St. Gallen. Since school days he has been a member of the Swiss Student Association , namely of the GV Angelomontana student association at the Engelberg Abbey School and of the AKV Neu-Romania in Freiburg.
