Bioethics, medical ethics and hospital pastoral care

Eibach's work focuses on theological questions of pastoral care , the relationship between “science and theology” and, above all, questions of “ bio and medical ethics ”. He was one of the first ethicists who dealt in depth with questions of bio- and medical ethics. Even his doctorate (1973) dealt with questions of dying . In 1976 his extensive book “Medicine and Human Dignity. Ethical problems in medicine from a Christian perspective ”(5th edition 1997), in which he deals in detail with questions of euthanasia , determining the time of death, organ removal and organ donation, etc. a. deals. In 1978 and 1985 the first publications on ethical questions of genetic engineering appeared (Genetic Engineering - The Reach for Life, 1985), in 1983 on "artificial fertilization" and research on embryos . He has written statements on almost all essential questions of medical ethics. Eibach's work is characterized by his extensive experience as a clinic chaplain and constant dialogue with nursing staff and doctors in the clinic, as well as with biologists in the field of research. He tries to address ethical questions in everyday clinical practice as well as in research at the University Hospital Bonn. For several years he has dealt intensively with philosophical, theological and ethical aspects that neurosciences raise (see God in the brain? I - an illusion? 2006). Eibach advises on bio- and medical-ethical issues in several church and political bodies.

Death and dying

On the background of scientific studies and 30 years of experience as a hospital chaplain, Ulrich Eibach has emerged from a large number of monographs and writings on the subjects of ethics, death and dying . Here Eibach emphasizes that the dying process not only has an objective dimension , but is above all shaped by subjective experience . Since the subjective side of dying is often not given enough consideration in healthcare institutions , the development of palliative medicine is becoming increasingly important. Eibach finds access to the subjective side of dying in the dreams of the dying; they are very important pastorally .
