Research and scientific activities

With his research, Förstermann made significant contributions to the understanding of the endothelial-dependent relaxation of blood vessels (due to nitric oxide ), the identification of the enzyme group of nitric oxide synthases , and the phenomenon of oxidative stress in the blood vessel system. Förstermann has published over 270 articles in scientific journals with a review system. According to his own statements, he was cited 26,000 times and he had a Hirsch index of 87 (year 2017). He is also the author and co-editor of one of the major German-language pharmacology textbooks.
