Ulrich Lehner

Ulrich Lehner (born May 1, 1946 in Düsseldorf ) is a German manager who has been Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Telekom since spring 2008 . He also held the same position at thyssenkrupp from March 2013 to the end of July 2018 .

Life

Ulrich Lehner studied industrial engineering and mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt , where he graduated with a degree in industrial engineering and engineering. He was an assistant at the Chair of Business and in 1975 at the Law and Economics Faculty of the Technical University of Darmstadt with a thesis on models for financial management to Dr. rer. pole. PhD . From 1975 he worked for the auditing and consulting company KPMG and passed his exams to become a tax advisor and auditor .

In 1981 he joined the Henkel company and held various management positions. In 1987 he became a member of the Board of Directors in Düsseldorf and Head of Finance and Controlling, in 1991 he became Managing Director of Henkel Asia Pacific in Hong Kong and in 1995 a member of the Management Board , responsible for finance and logistics.

Ulrich Lehner has been President of the Advisory Board of the German-Chinese Business Association in Cologne since 1998.

From 2000 to 2008 he was Chairman of the Management Board of Henkel KGaA . According to information from Focus , his annual salary was EUR 3.08 million. After reaching the internal age limit, Ulrich Lehner resigned from the management in April 2008 and was succeeded by Kasper Rorsted . However, Lehner is a member of the shareholders' committee of Henkel AG & Co. KGaA. Since January 1, 2010, he has also been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Gerda Henkel Foundation. Since spring 2008 he has held the position of Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Telekom . From September 21, 2007 to September 24, 2010 he was President of the Association of the Chemical Industry . In addition to his work for Henkel and the VCI, Lehner is a member of the supervisory boards of Porsche , E.ON , ThyssenKrupp and HSBC Trinkaus & Burkhardt as well as advisory boards of other companies. He is also an honorary professor at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . From February 2013 to the end of July 2013 he was interim Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis . He replaced Daniel Vasella , who no longer ran for re-election.

From November 2007 to November 2016 Lehner was President of the Düsseldorf Chamber of Commerce and Industry . According to the statutes, his term of office ended after 9 years and he is now honorary president.

In August 2010, Lehner positioned himself as one of 40 signatories of the Energy Policy Appeal , a lobbying initiative of the four major electricity companies to promote the extension of the service life of German nuclear power plants. From February 2013 to the end of July 2013 he was interim Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis . In 2014 Lehner became an honorary member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts .

Currently (July 2018) Lehner is chairman of the supervisory board of Deutsche Telekom and thyssenKrupp , deputy chairman of the supervisory board at E.ON , a simple member of the supervisory board of Porsche Automobil Holding and a member of the shareholders' committee of Henkel KGaA . With effect from the end of the month, on July 16, 2018, he announced his resignation from the chairmanship of the Supervisory Board and resigned from the committee at thyssenKrupp.

Lehner is married and has two sons and a daughter.

criticism

Ulrich Lehner came under fire in 2013 because, as Chairman of the Novartis Supervisory Board, he approved a record severance payment of 58 million euros for the then President Daniel Vasella . Ultimately, Vasella waived the severance payment.
