Ulrich Loos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ulrich Loos (born May 1, 1939 ) is a German endocrinologist and university professor whose scientific focus is on the field of thyroid diseases (thyreology). Together with Gerhard Rothenbuchner and Ernst-Friedrich Pfeiffer, he is one of the first to describe the low-T3 syndrome, the main component of the non-thyroidal illness syndrome .

Career

Loos studied medicine at the University of Heidelberg from 1960 to 1966 . In his dissertation , under the guidance of Gotthard Schettler , he dealt with the effect of the steroid methenolone on lipid metabolism . After moving to Ulm University Hospital , he headed the thyroid laboratory there since 1971 and the thyroid outpatient department since 1975. He completed his habilitation in 1982 with fundamental and clinical studies on thyroid hormone metabolism . In 1988 he was appointed adjunct professor at Ulm University. From 1971 until his retirement in 2004 he headed an endocrinological research laboratory and a scientific working group, and since 1978 he has been a senior physician at the Ulm University Hospital. Loos organized nine international scientific conferences and published numerous scientific articles and books on the physiology and pathophysiology of the thyroid gland.

In 1998 Ulrich Loos was awarded the Science-Business Cooperation Prize of Ulm University.

In the course of his scientific life he led numerous research projects on the conversion of thyroid hormones, thyroid hormone resistance , sodium-iodide symporter , thyroid stimulin and, in particular, the molecular pathology of Graves' disease and endocrine orbitopathy .

In 2004 Ulrich Loos and Werner Kress founded KreLo GmbH Medical Diagnostics, a biotechnological company that develops and produces diagnostic tools for human medicine.
