Ulrich Pietzsch

Ulrich Pietzsch (born February 12, 1937 in Oberwartha ) is a German painter and author.

Life

Pietzsch is the son of an employee and small trader. From 1943 to 1951 he attended schools in Oberwartha and Cossebaude . He then completed an agricultural apprenticeship in Ebersbach and Pillnitz and worked as an assembly worker in Dresden from 1953 to 1954. He then started a traineeship at the newspaper Der Freie Bauer , where he worked as an assistant and assistant editor. After passing the special matriculation examination, he studied philosophy at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1959 to 1964 . During his studies he got to know Wolf Biermann and supported him in converting a cinema into a theater, where Biermann wanted to have his play Berliner Brautgang performed. However, this was banned before the premiere. Pietzsch worked from 1964 to 1966 as an editor for the " Neue Berliner Illustrierte ". As a result of the 11th plenum of the Central Committee of the SED in 1965, he was dismissed without notice together with Klaus Schlesinger , Jean Villain and Alfred Marquardt . The reason was his friendship with Biermann.

From 1967 to 1976 Pietzsch worked as a research assistant in the section for aesthetics and art studies at the Berlin Humboldt University. He refrained from defending his dissertation, completed in 1977, in protest against Wolf Biermann's expatriation. He also worked as a theater critic for Berliner Rundfunk and the magazine " Theater der Zeit " as well as a television author and author of books. His first book, Feinde , which documented the staging techniques of director Wolfgang Heinz , was published in 1969. His first marriage was to Erika Dahmke, with whom he had a son born in 1963. In 1970 Pietzsch married Lydia Wolgina , former first ballerina at the Berlin State Opera, and then worked in the field of ballet as a critic, filmmaker, translator and editor.

From 1976 Pietzsch worked as an autodidactic picture painter. He finished his work as a critic and lived secluded in Wandlitz . He painted scenes from his environment, genre pictures and still lifes. From 1978 he exhibited his works, including in the Berlin Gallery of the State Art Trade of the GDR and in the Museum of Agrarian Productive Forces in Wandlitz. In 1982, he and his wife applied for expatriation from the GDR and left for the FRG in the same year. After that they lived in the Kreuzberg district , from 1987 in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district . Pietzsch continued to work as a painter and exhibited regularly, in total he showed his pictures in 60 solo exhibitions (status 2009). He also wrote stories, diaries and poems.

Pietzsch lives and works in Kukate , Wendland .

plant

In the mid-1970s, Pietzsch ended his previous activities as a theater critic, scientist, book author and filmmaker in order to be able to devote himself to painting. He called himself “The Picture Painter” and, according to his own statements, came from a life that was determined by others to an existence that for most of the time allowed him unlimited freedom in the urge to create. In addition to pictures, watercolors and pastels, acrylic paintings and oil paper works have recently been created. Until 2015 he had 75 personal exhibitions in galleries, museums and institutions in Germany and abroad.

In addition to painting, he has always written, including poetry. His story book “Damned Homeland” attracted attention. He presented a book entitled “Set on the right horse”. Humorous episodes and stories show how it was in his life as a painter, what he experienced with gallery owners, museum people, general directors, picture collectors, exhibition organizers, artist colleagues and - last but not least - with his audience. Dr. Manfred Fortmann published an illustrated book about the painter. He himself wrote the life story of his wife and wrote about his childhood.
